Hoboken's W Hotel takes shape Thursday, February 28, 2008 By AMY SARA CLARK JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A s the W Hotel continues to take shape on the Hoboken waterfront, at least one local resident looks forward to recommending it to visitors. "We never had any hotels here in Hoboken," Helen Manogue, president of the Hoboken Quality of Life Coalition, said. "It's always been sending visitors to other places. We used to have to send them out to the Meadowlands, that was the closest place for years." Soon friends and family will be able to stay right down the street, and possibly for less than one may think. Although room rates have not yet been released, rates for the W's big sister across the river begin at $188 a night, according to the hotel's Web site. Slated to open in January, the luxury-brand hotel will also feature a high-end restaurant, bar and spa. In addition to 225 guest rooms, the 25-story building will house 37 luxury condominiums with unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline. Condo owners will have access to all the luxuries of hotel life including 24-hour room service, maids and concierge service. Hoboken-based Applied Development owns the hotel, to be operated by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. Of all the hotel's positive features, Mayor David Roberts is most excited about what its sleek architecture - by award-winning Gwathmey Siegel and Associates of New York - will say about his city. "It's a great symbol of this city's pride," he said. "When you're in Manhattan and you look at Hoboken . the W Hotel stands very tall and proud - and you know just where the City of Hoboken is. This tree is on the bike path on the promenade just across from the W hotel. Hoboken fared very well, a lot of branches scattered around but only a few trees down. Any flooding was on the far west side, there are a lot of basement level apartments in Hoboken. As far as I know the Hudson never crested. Hurricane/tropical storm at 8am, people sitting in and outside restaurants by 2pm.
