Northumberland Avenue
Northumberland Avenue
In this photograph the camera is sited at the junction with Great Scotland Yard looking west towards Trafalgar Square, the building on the left just out of sight is The Hotel Victoria which was opened in 1887 and named for the Queen as it was her Golden jubilee year. The hotel was used as were the others in the avenue as Government offices during the First World War, when the Government bought the Hotel Victoria it became Victoria Buildings and has since been renamed for the original building on the site, Northumberland House. On the opposite side of the avenue the narrow building at the junction with Northumberland Street is the Constitutional Club, built in 1884 it was one of the largest clubhouses in London and no longer exists. The famous Sherlock Holmes Public House is just around the corner past the pillar box but in 1895 it was called The Northumberland Arms. The building on the far corner is The Grand Hotel which was built in 1880 and was later sold and renamed Grand Buildings, it has recently been extensively rebuilt. The centre of the road is being used as a cab rank for the hotels in the avenue, in my time it was a motorcycle bay which I think has been removed for security reasons.

During the Second World War, it was taken over by the Government for use by the Ministry of Defence and renamed Northumberland House. Special Operations Executive (SOE) used a small room here to interview prospective candidates to become secret agents I spent a few weeks working inside here in 2004 before it became the present hotel. It had just finished being MOD offices. Interestingly there were signs on the floors above ground floor indicating direction towards bomb shelters. We discovered these were areas on the corridors/landings with reinforced concrete floors walls and ceilings.
