1:24 Dorvack - PA-36HD with HR-36M "Nove Fire Suplex"
The second Dorvack Powered Armor Suit kit built in summer 2009. This kit is another one from the series of Gunze Sangyo kits that had been re-issued by Aoshima since 2007. This specific kit (which is actually a pack of 2!) had been released in December 2008: 2 standard PA-36HD "Nove" suits, but with extra parts for another/new hand weapon - called the "HR-36M Fire Suplex" rocket launcher. The kit itself is easy to assemble, but (still) shares the flaws that were designed into it 25 years ago. Main problem are the legs: their building sequence makes assembly and painting very difficult. While all parts are molded very well, making them fit needs putty and sometimes some creativity. But overall, these kits are very good models and can be recommended even to beginners. This PA-36HD kit was built straight out of the box. Just the air intakes for the jet pack on both shoulders were opened (instead of just painting them black), and for added detail, the air hose on the right shoulder was modified (the original molded part was seperated into 3 pieces. The hose part was covered in thin paper tissue, to give it a textured and "insulated" look) and the flexible cables (supplied with the kit), which connect the rocket launcher with the hull right under the visor, received a "sunk" connector in a hull opening with a flap, instead of just glueing the connector plate from the kit onto the hull. I also wanted to drill out some rockets from the launcher for a more realistic look, but this did not work out well because the plastic material turned out to be very soft/"waxy" and warmth-sensitive. So, standard parts were used. As mentioned above, this PA's blue livery is authentic, and to match it with its red/white counterpart, I finished it with a similar fusion of bright OAV colors and a weathered look from military duty. For the painting I consulted the instructions as well as reference pictures and a Gunze Sangyo color conversion table. Finally I settled on 3 basic Humbrol enamel color tones for the hull: • The light blue tone became matte Humbrol 89 ("Middle Blue") • The head/upper back area was painted with Humbrol 96 ("RAF Blue") • The grey upper legs and arms I used Humbrol 127 ("Ghost Grey", FS 36375) because of its bluish hue. Overall I am happy with these tones, even though the RAF Blue looks surprisingly dull/grayish - due to the bright Middle Blue which is a stronger contrast than expected. The orange chest box, contrast stripes on the lower legs and other small details were painted with Humbrol 18. The visor was laid out with silver and later received a coat of transparent orange paint. After a wash with black ink and some dry painting with shades of the basic colors (esp. on the dark blue, where I tried to enhance the blue tint) I apllied the original water sliding decals - about 30 small stencilled letterings and warning marks. Their quality is very good, only problem (on any PA) is the spheric surface on the knees, though, where the decals can hardly be applied at all. Patience, decal softener and delicate knife cuts helped, but you can hardly avoid folds and overlapping areas. Thereafter, the kit received a matte finish - I tried a new matte spray varnish on this one, but the result is not as dull as expected. Looks a bit (too) shiny, but I left it this way. As a last step the PA kit was lightly weathered with silver dry painting on some edges, some rubbing with grinded soft pencil lead, and it received light smoke, dirt and dust weathering with water-based acryllic paint. Pictures were taken with a simple Kodak CX 7330 digital pocket camera. Again, the still vacant 1:35 diorama for the Gasaraki Armor was used, with a well-matching background of brick building ruins.
Danny Venlet * Cake
An object that unfolds into a table and four chairs. 1998. Prototype. Extremely simple in its complexity, Cake eliminates the clutter caused by the numerous legs in the classical combination of table and chairs. The four chairs can be moved entirely under the table top, like wedges of a cake, giving the whole the look of a block, and because of the full and curvy back of the chairs that what is under the circular table top is entirely withdrawn from sight. The stackable chairs are folded origami-like from a single 3 mm sheet of aluminium, while the folding also provides their necessary strength. Alternative materials for fabrication include moulded plywood and plastic. table : 83 diam x 73 h chairs : 43 diam
