Homemade soda water
Homemade soda water
A fairly cheap and really easy to use homemade soda water maker. I have CO2 canisters for playing paint ball on hand and wanted to base the kit off of that. These CO2 canisters are pretty cheap to purchase and fill on a local level. I purchased a cheap "duckbill" ASA adapter for the tank to screw into at a local paint ball store. At my local Parker ( distributor purchased the 2 brass fittings, pressure regulator and 120PSI gauge and had a 24" long hose made with stainless steel fittings, the hose is a TFE hose. The regulator came with the gauge. At the end of the hose is a simple ball tire chuck. Teflon tape used where things were screwed together. My cost minus the CO2 tank because I had it on hand is right at $70, but this could be done for less if one orders the duckbill ASA fitting online, and use a cheaper hose asm. And I've found the same type of pressure regulators with gauges on eBay for under $20. On the bottle is the adapter cap I made, just a plastic cap with a 1/2" hole drilled into it and a new rubber valve stem pulled though. To make soda water, simple fill the bottle with COLD water up to about 2" from the top, put on valve stem cap. Set pressure regulator to about 60PSI and charge the water bottle. Shake for 20 seconds then recharge the bottle, shake for another 20 seconds, and then a 3rd charge and shake. Now you have a bottle full of soda water. The more charge/shakes you do, the stronger it becomes. I've been playing around with the pressures as well but that doesn't seem to matter that much. I've gone as high as 80PSI. The plastic bottles can hold over 100PSI without any problems. The one "weak point" IMHO is going to be the valve stem cap. I'm planning on making one with a lathe out of aluminum at some point.
