...about the best that I can do in about 1/2-hr of PP short of calibrating my display and calibrating a perspective, geometry, CA & color-correction matrix for the G9 using these shooting-parameters, just "eyeballing" it. ...on the other hand, I don't think that this is all that bad. I'm sorry if this camera only cost me $450 and fits into my pants pocket, stays there on a motorcyle ride, and doesn't even have a detachable lens, not to mention only 12MP. Hell it's even *digital*, with a *zoom lens*. A 5x zoom, no less. Anyway all sarcasm aside I think the G9 pretty much buries the "digital isn't good enough to take good shots" argument as well as the "point & shoots aren't good enough to take good shots" argument. This is one of, if not *the*, best camera/lens combinations that I've ever had, and I've had *plenty* of cameras. It's just too good and will produce great shots if you know what you're doing with it. I can't speak for the camera jpegs, I never shoot it jpeg (though I know that it tends to use too much contrast). Ok by 2009/2010 terms it's a little long in the tooth, no DRC, no "best-shot" (I mean, Nikon has had that for years). But hell it takes pretty damm good pictures and if you know your way in post-processing you can get great results with it. Enough said about that. My question from here on out, with any new camera and/or lens, is going to be "how well does it compare to a G9". It's that simple. D700? D2X, D2S? Sure, at 4-8x the price, size & weight. G1, sure, if you want to swap lenses to get what the G9 gives you out of the box, plus pay a 2-3x premium. LX3, sure, if you don't mind giving up 2/3rds of the lens reach for a lens that's twice as fast and 30% wider at the wide-end. G11, sure, if you don't mind giving-up 25% of the reach for a lens that's maybe 30% wider at the wide-end, but no faster. Oh have I mentioned that these last 3 are 10MP cameras, vs the 12MP G9? Sorry but I hesitate to even get a G10! What appeals to me is the Canon SX series, again with the bridge-cameras, but in the rare cases where they can shoot raw, they are *really* limited to ISO80-100. At least I can get decent ISO200 raw shots out of a G9. And if the lens is too soft then you trade away real sharpness trying to get a wide focal length range. It's impossible to restore fine-detail lost to a dull lens, though true if the shot is tight enough there won't be much loss to notice. Still that's a hell of a tightrope to have to walk. But it would be interesting to try the new CMOS Canon bridge cameras to see just how far they've come since the S2. Which, at one point in time, I thought was da schizzle. As much as I loved my FZ5, I had to admit my S2 was a better camera...the FZ5 had a much better, much sharper lens and a lighter frame and better EVF, but the S2 had realistic color, much like the above while the color out of the FZ5 was, let's say, "somewhat fanciful" :) Trust me when I tell you that it took me even a few more bridge cameras, several DSLRs and a lot of time (about 3 years), tens of thousands of shots and easily over $10k in gear to get from the S2 to this. The solution to good IQ is not simply in buying a DSLR and it's certainly not in just buying a "Dave's Pick" or even a "Highly Recommended" camera from some camera-review website. It's in knowing what you *could* get, and get for a reasonable price, in terms of IQ, and realizing when you are not getting it. And trust me just about all of those sites will do ANYTHING other than show you what you could get out of a decent digital camera at a reasonable price. No matter what they say, no matter how many different times or different ways they say it, they are *all* beholden to the manufacturers in order to get "exciting" new gear and keep their sites humming and they will NEVER really show you what the cameras that they review can and cannot do. There's no money in that for them, and there is a LOT of money in making them all look mediocre and "relying" on the skill of the reader to read the tea leaves. Likewise there are a million effing pro photographers out there who make their living "showing" people how to get great results...from buying & reading their books or from buying their work, all of which is, of course, biased in their favor. The only way that you will see their best work is to buy their prints and they will never talk about their best techniques. And now that I've shown you, for free, how to get great results, and said this at least a dozen times, enough of this kind of talk. Whatever you buy, whatever you shoot, whatever you like, beat this or die trying. I'm done talking about gear, I leave that subject on this note. Ha hah, ha :) [I do however reserve the right to talk about shooting & post-processing techniques. Always :)] Hint: for a good visual experience without the commentary, just <
Day 7, Thank You!
Day 7, Thank You!
This picture is Surri two days ago watching birds. I never got time to take a photo of her today. Surri's theme for the day was Eat Like A Horse! We've seen rapid weight loss, now she's going to do her rapid weight gain routine. Last night I left a can of cat food and a bowl of dry food for Surri in case she was hungry overnight. This morning the bowls were empty. And she ate the tail off her fur mouse! I lost count of how many cans of food she's eaten today. This girl is HUNGRY! Surri has decided that the nebulizing is not her cup of tea and that we really are not going to do the coupage any longer. I think it is good that she is fighting me on the treatments now. Calicotude :) Surri had her one week check with her vet and the bottom line was that Surri is no longer in critical condition and that, as long as there are no further complications, she is going to be fine. Thanks to great doctors, Surri's fighting spirit and the absolute best of friends on Flickr, she's going to make it against all odds. It really is miraculous. The vet checked Surri's heart and lungs carefully. Her nebulization treatment is tied to the condition of her lungs so the vet also did a chest film. The diffuse infection in Surri's lungs has cleared but the consolidated lung lobe on the right side is still there. This may be permanent damage or, since she is still coughing, there may be more healing to do. Even if it is permanent it will not have an impact on Surri's quality of life. Surri's meds stay the same. They eye ointment was just for one week, so that ends. I can stop giving pepcid. Everything else is the same. We can't take her off of the injectable antibiotics because the oral meds are hard on the GI system and she still has diarrhea (but it is infinitely better than it was). Surri's family met me at the vet and they were just thrilled that she will come home to them some day. We'll know more about when that might be at her check up next week. I'm super sorry I'm not here on Flickr at all. I have zero time. Maybe less. Sorry!
