Tunes: A Comic Book History of Rock and Roll
Engaging as well as informative, Tunes traces the rise of rock and roll through the format of comics. Capitalizing on the immense popularity of the graphic novel, Vincent Brunner has assembled illustrators and cartoonists to visually depict the history of rock music through comics. This unique approach will not only appeal to those who grew up with the bands, but also to an entirely new generation of budding fans. Full of colorful personalities from larger-than-life divas to modest men who made it big, the story of rock is compelling and diverse. From Elvis and Little Richard to the British Invasion in the 1960s and onward through the eras of punk, heavy metal, new wave, and grunge, this series of black-and-white graphic depictions ranges from hilariously personal to absolutely wild. Each strip is accompanied by humorous yet informative text recounting the early struggles, successes, and challenges of each band. Also included is a selective discography for each band or artist, highlighting their biggest hits or most memorable songs.

Those of you who know Heidi and Me know that our dogs Adobe and Hannah are integral members of our family. I'm very sad to pass on the news that yesterday I had to take Adobe to the vet and have him put to sleep. Adobe had suffered from congestive heart failure, with enlarged heart, and fluid build up in his lungs. In the last month or so he lost about 20 pounds and got weaker and weaker every day. The last couple of days he could no longer make it up the stairs, so I'd carry him up for bed-time. On his final day he was refusing food, refusing medication, stayed lying in the same position all day, and was clearly starting to suffer. The sparkle in his eye was faded. He would not have lived many more days, and would have suffered through them. It was time for me to help ease his pain, and let him go. Adobe left quietly and peacefully with his head in my lap while I petted him, and my cell phone blared the tune of the Ohio State University Marching Band's incomparable "Script Ohio". (It's the ringtone on my phone, and my friend called.) I looked at Dobie and he looked at me, and through the tears I said to him "How about that for style, boy? You get to go out to the Ohio State marching band!" About that time his muscles fully relaxed as the drug took effect, and he just went to sleep peacefully and quietly for the final time, and was gone. I told him I was sorry, and I told him how much we loved him.
