  • (DEFROST TIMER) An electro-mechanical clock device that periodically switches from cooling to defrost to remove the buildup of frost from the evaporator. A possible compressor run time of 6 - 12 hrs. with defrost duration time of 20 - 30 minutes is common.
  • (Defrost timer) a very reliable, clock-driven switch (commonly being replaced with less reliable ADC circuit boards today) that is responsible for turning a refrigerator’s compressor off and its defrost heater on after a set amount of time.
  • An appliance or compartment that is artificially kept cool and used to store food and drink. Modern refrigerators generally make use of the cooling effect produced when a volatile liquid is forced to evaporate in a sealed system in which it can be condensed back to liquid outside the refrigerator

I don't you know about you - but all I've ever required of an oven is to be able to turn it on - set the temperature - and be able to turn it off again once it's done. An extra clock/timer is a nice addition but not utterly essential. Likewise all I need of a grill is to be able to turn it on - have it settable to high - medium - or low and to be able to turn it off again. So what the blistering bloody hell are all these icons and options for? I tried cooking a quiche from frozen last night - tried 'fan oven' set to 195°c - 3/4 of a hour later - and that was an extra 15 minutes more than the package said I needed and it was still frozen solid in the middle - tried 'int bake' (whatever that's supposed to be) for another 30 minutes - that eventually did the trick. But aaaargh. it's a f**kin' oven - it should just - oven.
