Community Chorus of Brooklyn

The Children’s Community Chorus of Brooklyn is not presently able to offer a program.

The Children’s Community Chorus of Brooklyn is a secular after-school chorus, consisting of Christian, Muslim and Jewish children, in Brooklyn, New York.   Since 1992, we have been a place where children of all religions and ethnicities gather each week and raise our voices together to create harmony and beauty.  When we walk through the doors of our practice hall, we become one family.

The Chorus is open to all children ages 7 – 17, and is completely free of charge.  Currently, the Chorus is comprised of over sixty children who represent a diverse mix of ethnicities, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds.  Our objective is to bring the children of New York City together through a common interest in music, and to celebrate the city’s incredible diversity.

Rehearsals are held on Friday afternoons during the school year (end of September – mid May), and the children perform a wide range of music, from Broadway to contemporary hits to old-time rock and roll.  The Junior Chorus is open to all children in Grades 2 – 5, and meets from 3:30 p.m. – 4:25 p.m.  The Senior Chorus, Grades 6 – 12, rehearses from 4:30 p.m. –

5:30 p.m.

There is no audition and prior musical experience is not necessary in order to join.  Our primary goal is to bring out the best in every child that comes through the door.  This is accomplished in a myriad of ways: by helping a member to overcome stage fright, by working on the strength and quality of a student’s voice, or by giving leadership positions to the oldest or most experienced members.  Solos are given to any child who wants one, not just to the most talented.

Former Chorus members have gone on to attend The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) and have made it into the vocal program at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.  Still others have performed at Carnegie Hall.

The Chorus gives two different Concerts each year, a Holiday Concert in December, and a Spring Concert in May.  In addition to these Concerts, the Chorus has performed at Community Thanksgiving Services, Senior Citizens’ homes, local festivals, and at various churches.  The Chorus has been featured in different newspapers and has appeared on television.
