Wain's Hotel Dunedin
Wain's Hotel Dunedin
Article by Jeremy Pearson. A quick glance through The Cyclopedia of New Zealand (Otago & Southland Provincial Districts) of 1905 offers some insight into the rich and somewhat amusing history of Wain’s Hotel, now known as Mercure Dunedin. Wain’s Hotel was described as an architectural ornament to the city, and for comfort and good management is surpassed by no other hotel in the colonies – a lofty accolade! Dig a little deeper and you find why Wain’s was held in such regard, “There are bath rooms and lavatories on each flat, with hot and cold water and shower connections. The bedrooms are supplied with electric bells, and nearly every bedroom has the luxury of a fire place… furnished with luxury, and managed with ability worthy of its reputation. Tourists from all parts of the globe frequent “Wain's”, which is also held in high favour by country families.” While times have changed in the years since 1863 when the first hotel was built on the site, Mercure Dunedin has maintained much of the original charm with its impressive Victoria facade and a rich sense of warmth and boutique character that have long been associated with this special place.
