Savage Passion

Rafita is the young, rising star of the bullfighting world known as "The Red Matador." He has never feared facing a bull since his first kill at the age of twelve. But when he falls in love with Mauro, a butcher who rends the bulls that Rafita kills, his confidence begins to waver. In the matador's dreams, Mauro (who, like a bull, is color-blind) is, alternately, the bull he faces in the ring and the butcher who carves up his own skewered corpse. Beautifully observed and drawn by Est Em, the author of Seduce Me After the Show, with a depth of style and passion, Red Blinds the Foolish depicts a complex relationship, and a cultural form, in a place where the sublime and the savage meet.

Scarlet Ibis Eudocimus ruber Here is a bird not too well known in continents other than South America. Pretty exotic for us. Of course, at first glance we wonder whether photograph had saturation jacked up. No it is the natural colour that is so bright. Don't miss the black wing tip. All of them have it. The blinding red colour comes from the crustaceans the bird feeds upon. The carotenoids have the strange ability to turn the colours of higher order animals into red, pink, orange and such. Examples - flamingos, salmon and, interestingly, the tree leaves which turn into glorious red and orange when the chlorophyll goes down in autumn! An interesting tidbit I picked up on the Net is that these are ancient species with fossil records going upto 60 million years. They almost saw the dinosaurs!

Blind Trust
On the Face of it, househusband Joe Wynde has it all - apart from his sight. Robbed of 90% of his vision by a degenerative eye disorder, Joe's goals, are simple: to raise his two sassy daughters properly while avoiding close physical contact with street furniture and bored banker's wives.

Compared to the glamourous lifestyles of his neighbours this may seem unadventurous, but as London is hit by financial crisis, some of them are about to discover just how exposed they are.

When Joe is falsely accused of causing the death of a fellow stay-at-home dad, he turns to unrequited old flame Miranda Lethbridge for support. A journalist with a keen nose for local gossip, she smells a conspiracy, which draws them into a web of illicit affairs and blackmail amidst London's wealthy elite.

A racket others will protect at all costs.

Via the damaged lenses of its protagonist, Blind Trust presents a unique and compelling crime story that casts a wry glance at the contemporary nature of wealth and loyalty.
