40G Ethernet Home

The 40G Ethernet resource center (http://www.40GEthernet.com) is dedicated to providing information to assist with the development of 40G Ethernet equipment, be that 40G Ethernet interface on Routers/Switches, Network Adapters and DWDM transmission equipment.

The web site provides links to component news that is relevant for developers of 40G Ethernet equipment, for the latest news follow us on twitter at http://twitter.com/40GEthernet.

The site is non-commercial and is not aligned to any one particular company (apart from those developing 40G Ethernet solutions that is!).

And finally - let's hear it for those "pragmatic" folks at the IEEE who made 40G Ethernet happen!!!

Ethernet Alliance plugfest for 40/100G Ethernet
The results of the Ethernet Alliance plugfest, hosted by IXIA in September 2010, are now available. The interoperability tests covered cables, modules and systems provided from over 16 Ethernet Alliance members, for more info on the plugfest click here.

Anybody for 40GBase-T ?
With 10GBase-T is just starting to be deployed some folks are starting to look at how to acheive 40GBase-T. Here's a link to great article that gives an overview of the technical challenges written by ComConsult Technology Information Ltd.

40G Ethernet long haul demo's in Europe
Both Mellanox and Extreme have announced 40G Ethernet long haul demonstrations. The Mellanox trial was at SURFnet whilst the Extreme trial was with CERN. In both case the long haul optics was provided by Ciena.

Ethernet system vendors announce 40G interfaces
Interop 2010 at Las Vegas saw both Force10 and Extreme Networks announce the support of 40G Ethernet interfaces on their systems targeted for Data Center switching. Hitachi Cable (Apresia) also introduced two terabit Ethernet switches with 40G Ethernet uplinks, here.

40GBase-LR4 in QSFP+ format!!
ColorChip http://www.color-chip.com/ have announced plans to inroduce in June2010 a QSFP+ based 40GBase-LR4 module. This will allow system vendors to offer all variants of 40G Ethernet (CR4, SR4 & LR4) with out changing the hardware.

Worlds first 100GbE NPU is also single chip 40GbE NPU
EZchip http://www.ezchip.com released the worlds first 100GbE capable NPU but what got us off our seats was its ability to support both 40GbE and 40G POS in a single chip via Interlaken interfaces. It also has 10G MAC's intergrated so with some smart FPGA work you can have a 4x10G / 1x40G multiservice line card - its enough to give up the daytime job and get coding. See an overview of the NP-4 here

Worlds first 40G Ethernet NIC card
Mellanox released a 40G Ethernet version of its ConnectX Converged Network Adaptor, http://www.mellanox.com. See a picture of the worlds first 40G Ethernet NIC card here.

Tyco Electronics release complete set of host CFP connector mechanics
Everything you need to design a CFP slot for a 40/100G Ethernet line card from Tyco Electronics http://www.tycoelectronics.com, see here
