Once upon a time in the West
In the 1960s, the Western genre of movies was heading towards an end. The deserts and the hot sun, the duels, the pursuit of revenge and treasure, cowboys riding horses, vast expanses of land and dry mountains, the Mexican standoffs, and glinting metal rowels on the heels of leather boots – apparently had stupendous potential for high-tension drama that movies were cranked out, left, right and center. The genre was then, craving for movies like The searchers, Shane or Rio Bravo. The Italian director, Sergio Leone declared that Hollywood had wrenched the plots so dry; they became ridiculous and unbelievable. He stepped in and showed the world his take on the Westerns. He stepped in to have his say - a final one to conclude the genre of an ancient race . A fistful of dollars, the first in the series of the Dollars trilogy directed in 1964 was a huge hit, and also a rip off from Kurosawa’s Yojimbo (1961). A fistful of dollars boasted of action with style. Clint Eastwood was then, a television actor and accepted the role of the man with no name for 10000 dollars – which the likes of Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson had declined. Clint Eastwood was also tired of being kind to everybody in Raw hide, a TV serial – kissing old ladies and dogs. He took the baton of the anti-hero’s image, and rode with it. And how! It was as if he had made up his mind and told himself, "I'm gonna be the badass cowboy of them all." Akira Kurosawa wrote to Leone, “It (A fistful of dollars) is a very fine film. But it is my film” and went to court. Leone argued that he was just bringing the story back to the Americans as Yojimbo itself was an imitation of an American novel, Servant of two masters. The jury didn’t buy it. Kurosawa settled for 15% of the film’s revenues in three South Asian countries and mentioned later that revenues from Leone’s film were more than what he earned with Yojimbo. With A fistful of dollars, one of the arguably best director-composer combinations – Leone and Morricone teamed up. Ennio Morricone’s haunting, howling background score was a fitting add-on to Leone’s iconic direction. The second film in the trilogy, For a few dollars more returned 800% on the investment. The role was initially offered to Charles Bronson who declined because he thought the script was repetitive. Clint Eastwood was roped in and was paid 50000 dollars. He played the gun-slinging bounty hunter with uncommon élan and became a star. Then came the biggie in 1966 - The good, the bad and the ugly, grossing over 6 million dollars. Some believe it was not only the best western but also the best movie ever made. The plot, the characters and their actions weaved a story that was a mixture of staple scenes from older Westerns. But the combination of Techniscope shots and a reticent and mysterious Clint, once again the man with no name – a bounty hunter who eventually morphs into a treasure hunter, Lee Van Cleef as The Bad and Eli Wallach as The Ugly was as good as it could get. Wallach was almost killed acting for the movie – many times over. Once he almost drank from a bottle of acid that was placed beside a soda. Another time, during the shooting of a landmark scene, Wallach jumps off the train chained to an army strongman, and lands on him. To get rid of the heavy corpse handcuffed to him, he drags the body onto the railway tracks and waits for the next train, crouching at the edge of the tracks with his arm as far from the tracks as possible to get rid of the handcuffs. When the train passed, Wallach’s head was so close to the train’s metal steps (that were not taken into account when filming the scene), he might have been decapitated. Wallach was later heard saying that Leone made good films but could not provide safety to the actors. During the shooting for one more scene, Wallach sits on a horse with his arms tied to his torso with a noose in his neck. When Clint Eastood shoots the rope, it snaps and Wallach’s horse strides ahead, with him struggling to stay on the saddle with his arms tied up. The horse ran hard for two miles with Wallach bouncing on it, trying hard not to fall. Nonetheless, the background score of The good, the bad and the ugly was an instant hit. Whistles, coyote howls, gunshots, shrieking voices galore – Leone had asked Morricone to create an instrumental that sounded like corpses laughing in their tombs. Leone declared then, that he had said all he wanted to say about the Westerns. He was to go back to the studio to work on a dream project, Once upon a time in America, turning down the offer to direct The Godfather. When asked about Clint Eastwood, Leone said the actor had two expressions – one with the hat and the one without. Paramount approached him again to make a Western and offered access to Henry Fonda, an actor who Leone couldn’t have afforded otherwise. Leone accepted the offer and worked on the script while Morricone worked on the music again. Leone offered the lead ro
