Amazon Cannibal Headhunter Children of the BonBon Outback
Amazon Cannibal Headhunter Children of the BonBon Outback
This shot launches my next major Philippine series. A trip via banca, ocean canoe with outriggers, from the outback tidal residences of BonBon, across the Cagayan river to Barra a community of squatters on the east side of the river where it meets the Sulu sea. Roasting on the beach i decided i needed a ride on the scooter to cool off and was drawn down this road where sat a banca rental place...mmm..ok i can paddle this thing and snap some pics as the tide was quite high. Guy wants 10 pesos for an hour ok, thats 25 Us cents...to my surprize he comes with it and does the paddling and i just sit and shoot!!! Ye ha although its a good 90F and sunblasting at 3pm...maybe a short ride but one thing leads to another and i fire him into overtime drawn to this Barra view i been shooting from far off. Waves are 3 feet high out there and very difficult shoot but maybe my most intense social shooting ever. Some of the scenes in this series will be quite shocking to the western mind but i remind you....In N America there are countless homeless living outta shopping carts...its bloody freezin, they sleep in dumpsters and never wash, wrap themselves in cardboard and...are truely homeless. These homeless aren't so as their numbers are so great the Philippine government rarely displaces them. Some been 20 years or more in these dwellings. They don't know a washing machine and do it by hand but their 75 kids are normally clean. The kids use the river as a toliet and to bathe but how many cities pump raw effluent into the ocean worldwide? These shopping carts don't have wheels but the temp never goes lower than 74F. They have an ocean view and afternoon sun overlooking the river, and always a breeze. Inner parts of Barra are much like the Agora area you have seen except a bit more upscale with less stagant water and disease potential due to ocean breeze Agora seems to lack. Its really Agora west, linked by land. The people are poor but seem generally happy. The series will focus on driveby shoots from the water, first west to inner BonBon then east across the river getting more intense . Will geo tag it all....So lets all pile in this little banca and see something u surely have never seen before. It can hold one million so lets get it on!
Fred's scooter
Fred's scooter
This is another picture from Fred. Click "all sizes" and you can see a lot of details. This picture has so much resolution, you can count pine needles on the tree in the background. I'm going to talk about the scooter, and leave the cars open to discussion for a few days. After that, I will post the ID of the cars that Fred has provided. The scooter is a Cushman Pacemaker. It is a big scooter that will dwarf a modern Vespa. This model was built between 1949 and 1956. I have one like it and I have never determined the correct year. Engines available range from 5 to 7.3 hp, and a few were labeled 5 hp just because some states would not let 14-year-old kids ride anything over 5 hp. Cushman engines were called Husky. They built engines long before they built scooters. The Husky is an air-cooled, single-cylinder, upright, flat-head with a Tilletson carburetor. The Pacemaker is a single speed scooter with a large automatic clutch. Acceleration is slow up to about 15 mph, and then it quickly goes to 40 mph or more. There is a two-speed model called a Road King, that is quicker off the mark, but slower on top end. Under the buddy seat there is a 2 gallon fuel tank and some luggage space. Your guitar won't fit in there, but there is plenty of room for a few wrenches, a spare spark plug and a spare innertube. I don't recommend putting your lunch in there unless you like sandwiches that taste like gasoline. I speak from experience. There is no battery. The engine starts with a kick starter, and the lights and ignition run off a magneto in the flywheel. The foot-operated brake works only on the rear wheel, but there is a front brake that was available as an option. Cushman dealers had a wide variety of accessories, including the buddy seat, bumper, and front fender guard that you see on this scooter. The 60-series Cushman differs from the 50-series in that it is larger and faster. It also has larger tires. Mine has a cable operated brake instead of the rod used on most Cushmans. I don't know if all 60-series use the cable. Be sure you look at this one large.
