  • (V brake) Bicycle brake systems are used to slow down or stop a bicycle. There have been various types of brakes used throughout history, and several are still in use today. The three main types are: rim brakes, disc brakes, and drum brakes.
  • (V-brake) Shimano's brand name for "linear-pull" (also called a "direct-pull") brakes. This is the most powerful type of rim brake thanks to long arms (greater leverage), inflexible brake-pad mounts and short cable paths.
  • (V-Brake) A Shimano trademark for a direct-pull cantilever brake, which does not use a separate transverse cable. A V-Brake has two tall arms, one of which has a housing stop and the other an anchor bolt. The exposed part of the cable runs horizontally from one arm to the other.
  • bicycle: ride a bicycle
  • bicycle: a wheeled vehicle that has two wheels and is moved by foot pedals
  • A bicycle or motorcycle
  • motorcycle: a motor vehicle with two wheels and a strong frame

Caliper brakes - especially 70's caliper brakes are crap so I had some modern v-brake bosses brazed onto the frame and fitted some sexy black Deore units. They didn't work quite as well as expected - something to do with flex in the actual seat-stays I think, but better than the originals. I don 't use them now I'm riding singlespeed though. Pfft.

It broke. For the price of a replacement I bought a whole bike from CrimeConverters. V-brakes are the business. Stops SO well now... and shifts gears nicely too.
