Broken SPD bicycle pedal
This is the two sides of the drive-side pedal -- a Nashbar-branded SPD compatible. I couldn't snap my right cleat in while riding yesterday. A quick look showed the reason why: a piece of metal on the front of one side is completely broken off. Quick workaround: Be sure to flip the pedal over to the good side. The real solution is to buy new pedals. Or hunt around for NOS I have somewhere in the garage. It's easier just to buy new, though. There's right at 7000 miles on these pedals which isn't too bad especially considering the abuse I've heaped on them. Still, the clipping in has never been very smooth with these pedals. Genuine Shimano SPD pedals work much better than these Nashbar specials, even when they were new.
