To some , balaklava is a knitted hood that conceals for those at the bottom end of the gene pool a miscreants identity . Far cry from its origin as a head covering knitted helmet designed on the hoof to protect soldiers in the Crimean War from the extremes of climate in which they fought.Lake Tahoe Storm Front - A 2009 Fall Foliage Report
It was wonderful to find that once again the fair City , my home, is the last resting place of four soldiers who not only fought in the Crimean War but were also memebrs of that band of some six hundred and sevty three men , who, on October 25th , 1854 , were ordered by that gutless , incompetent , upper class Commanding officer , Lord Raglan , to attack batteries of Russian Cannons, on horse , armed only with sabres.
Four men who took part in what we call, historically speaking , the "Charge of the Light Brigade" and somehow survived it are buried in Weaste Cemetery , Salford .
In the Cemetery there is a heritage trail with information boards like near specific graves of local and national historical interest. I was unable to find these graves today but have the names of the soldiers and their plot and grave reference numbers and hope to find their stones soetime next week.
You may recall reading the poem written by alfred Lord Tennyson , in fact one of my favourite English poets. Whilst the eulogy is a cherished treasure of English Literature and a compliment to one of the most famous military events in our heritatge , I am not entirely happy with it. It is a somewhat Romantic poem. Whilst it ends with a bump when the survivors had done their best , they rode back " not the six hundred. "
I may be a cynical old fool , but given what I do know from my recall of history, yes these men showed immense courage and what we like to think is typical English ( British ?) but the thing is glorified and later used to inspire soldiers , for example to take part in the Great War and often that was achieved by moral blackmail which was orchestrated by the government and filtered down to become localised pressure to do your duty at all costs.
I read somewhere that courage is simply grace under pressure , that is , in my view it is natural to be fearful and your brain will tell you that the sensible thing to do is to retreat from danger . In circumstances where there is no apparent escape, some individuals will re-act in a way that tackles that natural fear face on and risk their lives in the main to protect comrades.
Troops coming home from say Iraq who were later decorated for courage often say well , I was trained for it and just doing my job and am no hero and you hear the same in civilian life where , for example , someone ordinary pulls someone from a fire or saves someone being the victim physically violence . Such acts are instinctive - sometimes peopel survive them sometimes not.
Lake Tahoe Storm Front - A 2009 Fall Foliage Report Lake Tahoe Sierra Nevada Mountains Washoe County, Nevada Here's your 2009 Fall Foliage Conditions Report as of October 6, 2009. All of you photographers and tourists who consider yourselves true "leafers", read on!!! I’m always eager to get up to the High Sierra each year to experience the clean, crisp air and fall foliage that autumn brings. Heat is my personal enemy, so I’ll take any chance to cool off after several months of 95-100 degree days. This year, the peak of fall foliage season in the Greater Lake Tahoe area is occurring late, late, late! My flickr friend Leon reported two weeks ago from Monitor Pass and was chagrined to find only a tinge of yellow amongst the aspens. More than a week of hot days has passed since that time, further delaying fall conditions. After a low pressure system rolled through this past weekend, I was lured into the mountains in search of cold air, snow-capped peaks and, um, fall foliage? Early morning brought 1-4 inches of snow and low temperatures ranging from 15?-19? F at Echo Summit on Hwy 50, Luther Pass on Hwy 89 and Carson Pass on Hwy 88. Hope Valley in Alpine County was even colder at 11? F!!! In those areas, 95% of all aspen groves were less than 20% yellow. The other 5% are about 50% yellow; those locations are within SMALL groves near Sorensen’s (Junction Hwys 88/89), and near Brockway Summit on Hwy 267 southeast of Truckee. I spent the rest of my time gathering snowscapes, landscapes and waterscapes at my favorite lakes in the high country, so I did not bother to check peaks that are not specifically mentioned here. In my experience, Monitor Pass is one of the first to obtain peak of fall foliage color due to its altitude and exposed nature, so it may be well ahead of conditions as cited herein. This week’s frigid temperatures most certainly did a lot to kick-start the fall process, however, all but a very few locations are likely to disappoint the avid “leafer” within the next week. ______________________________________________________________ About the Image On clear days, Lake Tahoe is famous for its wild blue colors which range from aqua in the shallows to sapphire in the depths. On cloudy days, the lake appears gray and black. On this date, I was out of luck in trying to capture the blues, but I hope that I was successful in bringing back the essence of the storm front. The mountains all around Lake Tahoe were freshly coated with snow on this stormy autumn day. The light was low and flat, and against better thinking, I still used a polarizing filter to bring out cloud definition. I had to wait quite a while to get a pool of light to set off the foreground. Yes, the lake level is very low; many boat ramps are closed at this time.
