Black Bear thinks he was invited for breakfast
Black Bear thinks he was invited for breakfast
I have had my first up close encounter with a bear (well maybe not that close...about 30 feet - but way too close for me). I would say he (or she) was about 250 lbs, and between 5-6 feet tall when standing? Here is my bear story, that I will be selling as a movie short for Canadian TV ;) Beautiful morning, and I was sitting out at the picnic table enjoying some fresh air (ok...having a smoke) - thankfully I didn't bring Buster out with me this time (not sure why, but I was thankful I didn't have to worry about him). In my head: lalala...what a beautiful day....lalala....breakfast smells good...lalala...bear....la....BEAR! On take 2 I confirmed that I was staring straight at a bear, that was about 30 feet away from me or so. Thankfully, he was very mellow, and didn't seem at all concerned about my presence - but the feeling was NOT MUTUAL. As I walked briskly to the cottage door, I tried to softly shout out to my parents that there was a bear outside. To which I got a wha??? I repeated myself a little louder, and heard back a huh??? Now I do describe myself as shouting (but not too loudly) the word bear - but my parents report it more as a school girl squeal ;( Once inside, we closed all the doors and windows - to minimize the smell of breakfast (I don't think our shabby door or windows would stop a bear from joining us for breakfast if he wanted). Once safely inside, I was able to capture several photos through the windows. He ended up trying to get into our garbage bin. After about 20 minutes of pawing, biting, and trying to lift up the bin, he gave up and moved on. The garbage bin was still intact - however with pieces of wood torn right off, and he managed to shift it about 3 inches (me and my dad tried to move it back in place, but couldn't get it to budge). I think Buster knew the bear was out there, as 5 minutes before I went outside - he tensed up, and started to growl very softly, and also do really quiet barks. The only time I have ever seen him do the quiet tense growls is from time to time on our cottage driveway...which I take as a sign that something is out there and turn around. So maybe Buster is good at being a bear alarm?
