Rainy Days
Rainy Days
From the beginning when I was young, I loved the rainy days. In my hometown in Pico, sometimes it is boring for people. But for me, no, it is the opposite. I used to love to stay home, and sit on the bench by the window in the dining room, crochet and listen to the harmonious sound of the rain drops when they fall on the roof, sometimes hard, sometimes soft. It sounded like a romantic symphony, and provided me with an opportunity not to go to the farm and work in the fields. At that time I did not understand the significance of romance! I just adored listening to the melody of the song that the rain made. Today I know it is very hard to find this romantic feeling in our daily life. But I still get the same pleasure from the sound of the rain. Why? I don’t know.

I am sitting by the window in my room working on the blanket for my granddaughter to be, remembering those days from long time ago. Of course I can’t hear the rain drops on the roof, but I imagine, and hear them on the window. I can see them coming down, slowly falling on the asphalt of the driveway. All of my senses come together, and I drift back into time...

I went to check the past, 35 years ago, a time when for me all the days were rainy days, when I was preparing the clothes for my first child. At that moment it was not necessary to have the rain, for me to sit by the window to crochet a lace trim to put on the white sheets and pillowcases for his bed. Even in my belly I felt that I carried a baby boy not a girl, in those times they did not have any way to know for sure till it was born, but I just knew it was to be a boy!

I still have the sheets but they are no longer good for my granddaughter. My son’s crib was much smaller compared to the ones they have nowadays. She is going to have the best! Like I tried to do the best for my son, her parents are doing the same for her!

I went to the Camoes Park when some nights I fall asleep with the sound of the rain on the roof of the tent. The next morning I walk along the trails a bit damaged from the rain and remember the street back home (Rua Do Alto) where I grew-up, enjoying the smell of the humid earth, the strong scent is so powerful, it takes me back to the island where I was born.

I went to the Bruce Trail, where I heard and felt so many times this wonderful sound and touch of the rain: in the woods, under the roof of the gazebo, and under the thin material of the umbrella, on my hat and clothes, on my hands and face. It is not comfortable in the wet clothes but the fresh wet droplets on my skin somehow feel unexplainable.

I went further until Smooth Rock Falls where some days we had rain, like today. A different rain, just because I see it coming down on the grass around the house and not the asphalt of the street. I stand and stare at the droplets as they slowly fall, almost vertical on this windless day. Although I can’t go into the forest to hear the rain in the trees I can hear it on the country house, it is such a beautiful sound. It is very calming to the soul, like a piece of art, the art of nature! Any art can be beautiful, but none can compare to the beauty of my universe…

Like everything in life, the rainy days can create or destroy many things, but we can’t live without them. We need them to water the fields, to quench the thirst of people and wildlife, to replenish our lakes and streams, to allow us to see the rainbows, to make our grass and trees green… Like it or not, there is much to enjoy in a rainy day if you just look and feel at the wonder of it!
