MICROPREMATURE BABIES: HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?
Since the mid-90's, our newest minority consists of the tiniest humans, born weighing less than two pounds.
This film is about the psychosocial impact such a birth has upon the family. We seek to explore their world and answer these questions: Who are they? Why does this happen? What challenges do they face after long term hospitalization? Will these children be a burden on society?
This is a highly personal film, and it begs as many questions as it answers. It is emotional. It is intimate. The style is human revelation, told subjectively rather than objectively, by the parents and the medical experts who care for these newborns. It is more a diary than an essay, more a drama than investigative journalism. It is not about "litter births", or babies from 'druggie' moms, or babies born with life-threatening anomalies. It's about the average person who does everything right and still begets a severely premature child. Stories of love, hope, humor and sacrifice triumph over fear, pain, and difficulties (an International Medical Media Award Winner).

Before the girls were born Courtney folded a thousand cranes and wished for the girls to come through this horrible pregnancy - her wish came true. Lilly has more good days than bad and hopefully will come home a strong little chicken. Here is a little rundown of how our miracle babies came to be here - multiple at home insemination attempts 3 iui attempts 2 IVF 9 weeks - sub chorionic hemorrhage - trip to ER where they told us Court would most likely have a miscarriage and gave us a lovely paper on threatened abortion modified bedrest begins 19w6d - Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM - water breaking) for twin B (Lilly) Courtney was admitted to the hospital and was told she would miscarry in 24-48 hours most likely due to infection. 50% of all cases do. we were given the choice to terminate entire pregnancy since the chance of getting to viability was virtually nil - politely declined. went to a specialist who advised best course of action was to selectively terminate baby B - politely declined Decided to wait it out and let nature take it's course they sent us on our way and said come back at 24 weeks if you make it that far. 24 weeks came we decided to get to 28 weeks on at home bedrest 28 weeks came we decided to get to 32 weeks on at home bedrest 32 weeks came and Courtney was itchy on her hands and feet like crazy - turns out she had Cholestasis - Obstetric liver disease and had to start taking pills for that at 33 weeks we made a plan for Courtney to be admitted at 34w2d and deliver March 18 - 35w1d at every OB/ Perinatologist/Specialist appointment we heard the same thing - the babies will most likely not make it, the odds are against us, the percentage that this will have a happy ending was less than 1%, baby B might not have any lungs, might have severe physical deformities...we just kept trucking 33w4d she developed preeclampsia and the girls arrived screaming!
