Speed Modeling for Google Earth

  • Tips and Tricks
  • Terrain
    • When in Google Earth doesn’t match
    • The closer you get to Google Earth when taking a snapshot the more accurate it will be
    • Improvements in SketchUp 8, more accurate terrain, 2500 points per terrain grab
  • How to obtain imagery for models when building maker doesn’t have the coverage?
  • How to update models when imagery and terrain change
    • Clients sometimes don’t understand that it’s an ongoing process to keep up to date
    • Would like to see Google be more robust in service, changing less often to have lower impact on necessary model changes
  • Match photo
    • Most people have used it, a couple haven’t
    • Would like to see an app for android to take “match photos” for match photos
      • have cross bows and lines to prep for match photos
    • Make sure blue line is straight up and down
    • Always start from a point, not out in space
    • Measure roof outline in Google Earth, use tape measure to scale the entire model
    • Use the tape measure tool to measure known length.
    • It will give you the SketchUp dimension, then type in the actual dimension and say “yes, re-size my model” and then it will give a fairly accurate scale
    • Will match photo create the igloo?
      • Would potentially have to go through Building Maker and add your own photos
    • Plug-ins where you can move the model in GE and then the SketchUp model will update
  • Reducing texture size
    • Do you leave all components in place before uploading?
      • Don’t even name components
      • Some people find the outliner helpful
      • If you explode before uploading, you lose information and benefit of making a component
  • Use shortcuts to make work-flow faster
  • Aligning model with terrain
    • First thing usually do is grab a point and match to terrain
    • If one side is floating and one is sinking
    • Make groups of a certain surface and then scale that group to terrain
    • Sometimes it makes the model less accurate
    • Where do you make your initial point match the terrain
      • About the center, where you don’t have to adjust as much
  • Manual save is faster than autosave
  • One of most important shortcut
    • Hide rest of model
      • Will save lots of time
      • View menu > component edit > hide rest of model
  • Make groups to scale the group to match the texture
  • Optimizing textures
    • Export out as obj or 3ds
    • Exports out model and the images you use
    • Then you can see which images are the largest and then scale them down from there
