The 36th infantry division also known as the Texas division first saw action on the 9th of September in 1943 when it landed by the Gulf of Salerno against intense German opposition. This regiment also captured Mount Maggiore, Mount Lungo, and the village of San Pierto despite the extreme winter weather that interfered. On January 20, 1944, they crossed the Rapido river but were repulsed by the 15 Panzer grenadier division. The division went around many obstacles, but eventually captured the commander of German western forces.
