This is one of the "lungs" which controls the air pressure. As the sun heats the glass of the domes, the air inside expands. As it is all airlocked there is no place for the air to go except inside here. A thick membrane is attached to a 20 ton steel table. As the air comes into the room, the stainless steel table is lifted off the ground. At night, the air cools, contracts, and the table is lowered back to the floor.

This is a picture of the snow cave with Table Mountain in the background. It was a beautiful day and we were sad to leave but we had to. Note the pole stuck in the roof. We place several of these around the perimeter to keep people from walking on the cave while we are in it.
