Erie Canal Village - Dining Room area - Bennett's Tavern
This is a shot of the dining room area at Bennett's Tavern. The long tables were at times probably crowded and the menu probably did not vary much. According to traveler's descriptions of such dining, the food was good and eaten quickly and noisily. The open door, on the left, leads into the bar area. I didn't get to see the kitchen area but it is also located on the first floor. The meals were said to be cooked by the tavern keeper's wife or by someone hired to do the cooking. If the business did have hired help, they probably stayed right at the tavern in the little rooms which were above the kitchen. Much of the cooking at the tavern was probably done on an iron cook stove; the baking could have been done in the fireplace bake oven. The kitchen sink has always been located where it is today, and parts of it are original to the building. Bennett's Tavern is located in the Erie Canal Village, along Routes 46/49, west of Rome, NY.
Clearing the dining room table (which is also the homework area, mail center and dumping ground for all papers) feels good but is not long lasting.
