Cyclops (The Margellos World Republic of Letters)
In his semiautobiographical novel, Cyclops, Croatian writer Ranko Marinkovic recounts the adventures of young theater critic Melkior Tresic, an archetypal antihero who decides to starve himself to avoid fighting in the front lines of World War II. As he wanders the streets of Zagreb in a near-hallucinatory state of paranoia and malnourishment, Melkior encounters a colorful circus of characters—fortune-tellers, shamans, actors, prostitutes, bohemians, and cafe intellectuals—all living in a fragile dream of a society about to be changed forever.
A seminal work of postwar Eastern European literature, Cyclops reveals a little-known perspective on World War II from within the former Yugoslavia, one that has never before been available to an English-speaking audience. Vlada Stojiljkovic's able translation, improved by Ellen Elias-Bursac's insightful editing, preserves the striking brilliance of this riotously funny and densely allusive text. Along Melkior’s journey Cyclops satirizes both the delusions of the righteous military officials who feed the national bloodlust as well as the wayward intellectuals who believe themselves to be above the unpleasant realities of international conflict. Through Stojiljkovic's clear-eyed translation, Melkior’s peregrinations reveal how history happens and how the individual consciousness is swept up in the tide of political events, and this is accomplished in a mode that will resonate with readers of Charles Simic, Aleksandr Hemon, and Kundera. I first discovered photography as a child, when playing with camera’s belonging to my cousins or parents. As a child I was very photogenic, and I loved every idea about the camera. Later when I got my first camera, all I would do was snap pictures, even if there was no film. Growing up, I discovered the immense enjoyment in taking pictures. When I was selecting courses for Grade 11, I discovered that I needed and Art credit to attend the photography course, but all I had was Drama credits. Fortunately I did not give up here and finally got myself into the Photography course. Through the year, I learned how to use a camera and I discovered how to notice my surroundings with a camera. Photography no longer became something I do only on trips, but an active role in my life. My perspective on life was enhanced with the camera in my hand as I went around snapping pictures. Instead of lining something up perfectly in the frame, I experimented and took a picture on a steep angle. The whole year was about experimenting for me and learning useful tips. It was also a year to work with close friends and to understand and learn from their perspectives. When I was editing or selecting pictures, I asked other people for their opinions. I don’t like to post pictures that only I would enjoy. I want the pictures to appeal to other people so that they can connect with the picture. While working on the projects I was assigned, I soon discovered that I was a weak photographer when shooting people on the streets. It was not so difficult with a model because they will pose for me and they understand what I am doing. I found that on the street, some people tend to panic, or observe your actions, cautiously. I began to feel exposed. However, now I feel that the more I practice at it, the better I will become at it. I did encounter my ability to photograph architecture, with the help of my teacher. Architecture sort of became my topic or area. My style later developed as it became more serious, instead of humorous. I became a photographer that focuses more on my environment and location, rather than the people in that location. As they year went on I slowly discovered the joys and challenges of being a photographer. I still have much to learn and I hope that next year, I can double my efforts. Since this was my first year, it was more of a learning experience, and so next year I want there to be more of focus and more style so that my work is linked back to me. One photographer whose pictures I really enjoy is Hans Neuman or hansneumannpro on Flickr. He has a wide variety of photos, which include landscape, architecture and models. His landscape pictures and his architectural pictures are very well done and have inspired me and taught me to notice the detail in building and the colours in my surroundings. The effects and the enhanced visual colours are extremely fascinating, and the positioning of his camera and the symmetry of the pictures make them beautiful. I would also like to mention David Babcock’s pictures or Cyclops_70 on Flickr. There are extraordinary pictures of New York and of Toronto that made me want to do my final project on architecture. (Updated Inspiration) Dave Go’s discovery of 62Lofu is a great inspiration. His Hong Kong Skyline picture has to be one of my favourite. He has inspired me to experiment shooting at night. Hopefully my pictures turn out as well as his.

A shot of Marvel Legends Cyclops using the Portrait mode on my camera. I like the contrasting colours this has given and the fact the trees in the background have swayed and have gone out of focus allowing Cyclops and his detailing to be viewable perfectly.
