Roper, Frank & Edith
Roper, Frank & Edith
Frank Roper was born in Winster in 1883. On 14 October 1907 he was married in St. John's Church to Edith Shaw. Edith was born in 1884 in Shottle, Derbyshire. Frank died on 23 December 1957 and Edith on 28 December 1968. Two deaths in one family around Christmas. When Frank died in 1957 I was 12 years old and living with my parents in Leacroft Road. I vividly recall one of Frank's sons (a contemporary of my Dad) calling at our house one evening and asking my Dad if he would be a Bearer at Frank's funeral. My Dad answered the knock on the door and in walked Frank's son, politely removing his cap as he came into the kitchen. He acknowledged my Mother and simply made his request. My Dad immediately agreed to perform this solemn and dignified duty and expressed his and my Mother's sympathy over Frank's death. What struck me as a 12 year old was the quiet dignity of these brief proceedings. It made a lasting impression on me - how the sorrow of death is keenly felt for a father by his son and how the bereaved family turned to their friends and neighbours for support at the funeral and how that support was instantly given. The whole interview was over in seconds but it was full of dignity. The memory has stayed with me for my lifetime.
