venetian blinds can be raised to leave the window completely bare, or dropped, and then slats angled to allow the passage of light. They are a good solution in a room that is overlooked, and can be softened by using a pelmet or roman blind as well.

When this building went up, people immediately started calling it the "Venetian Blind" building, for obvious reasons. In fact, it's the Federal Reserve building in Boston. (My step-father worked on the project as an electrician.)
