Air Force Afterburner-Damon Bradshaw
Air Force Afterburner-Damon Bradshaw
Damon Bradshaw (left) chats with Christopher Jackson, Jr. (right) while his father accompanied him through a pre-race event at the Monster Jam inside the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas on Jan 11. San Antonio, known as a military city with six military installations in the metropolitan area, was almost a perfect place for Damon Bradshaw and the “Air Force Afterburner” monster truck. Despite having a Saturday performance that had the Alamodome staff talking about it the next day, it wasn’t enough to beat the Corpus Christie native, Lupe Soza and the El Toro Loco. By the end of Sunday’s competition, Bradshaw took second with fast lap times and freestyle performances that had the crowd of approximately 45,000 up and cheering. His 540 cubic inch Merlin supercharged racing V-8 engine churned out 1,425 horsepower and constituted the power under his right foot. Bradshaw, in his 3rd season, demonstrated that he had mastered the application of power by launching the 10,000 lb vehicle more than 40 feet in the air and thrilled crowds. The Air Force Afterburner is equipped with four-wheel steering. Combine that with massive amounts of power, Bradshaw used it to continuously spin the vehicle on a dime, turned and spun out all four 66” tall and 750 lb wheels and tires. The Sheraton Gunter Hotel, seen on the left, sits at the corner of Houston and St. Mary's streets. Notice the few buggies parked along the street, ironically, in 2010, the direction of traffic on Houston Street would not have interfered with the traffic back in 1900. Photo by Andrew Delgado
