  • A fuel pump is a frequently (but not always) essential component on a car or other internal combustion engined device.
  • A high volume and pressure of fuel is required to run an EFI system. EFI fuel pumps are sized in liters (LPH) or gallons (GPH) and are capable of producing 60-90 pounds of pressure in the fuel line. A typical automotive fuel pump for a carburetor produces 5-7 pounds of pressure.
  • The fuel pump moves gas from the gas tank and delivers it to the fuel injection system or carburetor.

Derek Steinkamp shows the engine of his 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR that he modified to make it an alternative E-85 fuel vehicle. His car features a 4B11T; 2.0 liter displacement, turbocharged, 16 valve, DOHC engine with 495 horsepower and 440 lb./ft. torque. The vehicle uses E-85 ethanol which costs $3.29 a gallon compared to $4.54 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. The savings is $1.25 a gallon. Modifications performed: 1000cc/min fuel injectors 255 liter/hr fuel pump Custom fuel & timing software remapping* Wideband oxygen sensor FP Red Turbocharger Hi-flow air induction system Hi-flow exhaust system with 100-cell catalyst * this is the only essential change required to switch to E85, and can often be done for around $500. All other items were added to accommodate (or maximize) the increased power output.
