Capitol Reef, through the slot
Capitol Reef, through the slot
One of those places where your senses all of a sudden become hieghtened and you feel that tingling sensation that is part excitement and part apprehension as you are about to go through an area that is so wierd. This road beyond the pavement in Capitol Reef is a wondrous place. The minivan did herself proud, (who said they were only good to take the kids to soccer practise). I have been fairly chastised for not clarifying that last remark. My minivan is a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan, sporting 16" rims, slightly oversized tires, designed for ATV travel so they have very strong sidewalls and tough belts. I also carry a large "Jack-All" which allows me to lift the van up high, push it off the Jack and I can turn it around in a very small space, or move it sideways out of a problem area.. We travel well prepared for problems with lots of supplies, food, tons of water, electolyte balancers, and a well thought through survival kit.. Using common sense, travelling slow, and watching for trouble before your in it are all a prerequisit to a safe and enjoyable trip over many of these roads. One last and VERY important point. If the road you plan to travel is in backcountry you should carefully check the weather for the next three days and see if it will be completely dry out, then check the three days before you set out to make sure they have been dry as well. Never cross streams or small rivers unless you are sure of the depth of water and then take it slow so your fan doesn't splash water all over the motor and kill it... Other than these few things, Learn to live a little and GO FOR IT....
My Big Boy Toy
My Big Boy Toy
This is my 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Polaris Predator 500. I bought it new off the showroom floor and it has been pampered ever since. I replaced the original white fenders with black for two reasons, one to save the original plastic, and two to make it look AWESOME! I have installed Rath Racing fan shrouds and a Pure Polaris ceramic coated header. I also added the Pro Armor aluminum nerf bars and a kill switch. Other than that, the bike is exactly how I brought it home. The front and rear Foxx Podium resevoir shocks came factory installed, as well as the Douglas aluminum rims and Maxxis RAZR-R radial tires. I took this photo at a Memorial campout we had last year at a friends house. The bike was parked in about a foot of weeds so masking this one took some serious time! Everything came out pretty good except for a few places in the tires around the bottom where I tried to cover up the weeds. If you are interested in getting into riding four wheelers this is NOT the bike to purchase! I went from a 350 4X4 with a top speed about 25 MPH to this monster. I'm not sure what the top speed is, but everywhere I go it turns heads. I took it to a Harley Rally not too long after I got it and thought I'd see what it would do. I took off across a field that was a little over a quarter mile and when I hit 4th gear I nailed it and the front end raised up on me. My friends guessed I was somewhere in the 70MPH range at that point (it's a 5 speed). I let off, put the bike on the trailer and didn't ride it again for about 3 months. THE BIKE SCARES ME TO DEATH, but I love it!
