Mountain Bike Portrait With a Jumper!
Mountain Bike Portrait With a Jumper!
For the first AZ Strobist Mountain Bike Mayhem shoot there were a lot of riders going up and down around the photogs. As things wound down, and the Sun tucked behind the hills, I grabbed a rider and asked if he wanted a portrait. He said, sure... how? I positioned him in front of the big jump and setup my large softbox to the left. It had two SB-26s, and no front diffuser panel, but I left the smaller middle diffuser in place. Light would go through that, but also bounce back off of it into the softbox, kind of like a beautty dish--kinda. Either way, large soft, light source, and tons of power. I even had an SD-8 battery pack hooked to each flash for fast recycle times. The first shot left the right side pretty dark so I added a 580EX with a bounce umbrella to the right. There was also another 580 on the other side of the jump that didn't really do much, it might not have gone off. But still, I got the light I wanted balancing the strobes with the ambient. I am pretty happy with this one, and it only took a 5 minutes or so to get it this way--granted, the lights were already setup on stands and all I had to do was move them around. On top of that, I noticed a rider headed for the jump. I told the guy in the portrait to hold his pose... wait for it, wait for it--*snap* I did just a few like this, maybe three or four, with a jumper in the background. This was partially inspired by Carlos Benjamin's group shot.
