  • a table at which meals are served; "he helped her clear the dining table"; "a feast was spread upon the board"

The apartment at Patchin Place was probably.... 400 square feet, so one had to make choices. Did I have a dining room table, or a kitchen island? The kitchen had no surfaces - that is to say, the fridge was right up against the stove, which was right up against the sink (and both the fridge and the sink had burn marks from where someone had left the range on too long). Next to the sink was the wall - so LITERALLY, there was no place to chop or cut anything, and forget about toasting or putting down a hot carafe of coffee. I came up with the ingenious plan of frankensteining two Ikea items together - this kitchen island, which became my cooking and (more importantly) cocktail mixing surface, and then i drilled two holes and sank this bar extension in which was used for dining. Problem was, the bolts on the bar extension weren't long enough to actually make it to the other SIDE of the island, so the whole thing is glued together with 2 ton epoxy. Here, a bucket of water holds the bar (mostly) straight while the epoxy dried (I gave it 3 days).

A bit of a lame photo I'm afraid but we've spent all days sorting out our possible orangery extension (that sounds posh doesn't it) but it is an orangery rather than a conservatory, as it has some solid walls. We went to see one that they've just finished and it was stunning it has completely changed their kitchen and with the twins we really need some more room. It will extend the kitchen so we can put in a large table and a sofa and convert our current dining room to be the play room. It's very exciting and I can't wait to get on with it, just a pity the quote is so scary but when we look at it compared with moving it would cost us nearly half the orangery quote just on estate agency fees, stamp duty, removals and legals costs.
