PCC Wellness Challenge '11
WINTERVILLE—As part of a campus-wide wellness program, Pitt Community College employees were challenged to ride bikes as part of an exercise regimen during the month of May. The program, which was held in conjunction with the national Bike to Work initiative, encouraged employees to commute via bicycle when possible, as well as to ride recreationally with their families. To support this wellness initiative, local bike shop Babits Bikes provided water bottles to all PCC participants and a new wireless cycling computer to the employee who logged the most miles. With a tally of 562 miles, Robert Tallo, an accounting instructor, dominated the Bike Wellness Challenge. Kieran Finney, membership director of the ECVelo Cycling Club and PCC’s multimedia specialist, presented Tallo with his new computer on behalf of Babits Bikes. “Cycling is a fantastic way to keep aerobically fit, tour the county, or save money and parking space in your daily commute,” Finney said. “Robert is proof that you can enjoy cycling for fitness and fun and help make the roads and parking lots around town a little less crowded.”

Velib’ (French: velo libre or velo liberte, English: free bicycle or bicycle freedom) is a large-scale public bicycle rental programme in Paris, France. The initiative was pushed by Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoe of the French Socialist Party. The system was launched on 15 July 2007, following Lyon's Velo'v success and the 1974 pioneering scheme in La Rochelle. 7,000 bicycles were introduced to the city with 750 automated rental stations each with fifteen or more bikes/spaces. This number quickly expanded the following year to some 20,600 bicycles and 1,450 bike stations, roughly one station every 300 metres throughout the city centre, making Velib’ the largest system of its kind in the world.
