2011... Happy, so far?
Hope everyone who views this is doing fine. If you have noticed my recent absence from Flickr, I am happy to let you know that everything is okay, and that I was cut off from the internet for 9 or 10 days due to a little mishap that pulled apart a simple gadget, the DSL filter, that connects the cord of the modem to my phone line. As it turned out, virtually no one working in the big electronics stores -- such as the 'geek squad' at BestBuy -- recognized what it is and what it is used for (it has the words DSL filter clearly printed on it). Instead, they steered me to other stores that don't carry any... I then talked with a technician at AT&T, my DSL provider, who, from a place half around the world gave me the addresses and phone numbers of several "AT&TStores" within a few miles from me -- and also advised me to be sure to call it a 'splitter' -- which it is not! Turns out, the service stores don't have any except when a modem is returned and a connector happens to be lying around. One AT&T customer service representative, even, was so bold as to tell me that considering the number of years (five-and-a-half) I had subscribed to this service, there was nothing they could do for me at this point....Finally, after having insulted one too many AT&T employees over the phone, I happened upon one woman who empathized with me and put me in touch with the right order/parts department. It then 'only' took from last Tuesday until today, Monday, to get here via 2nd-day air delivery... May things go more smoothly in 2011 :-) >>>
My old Alcatel 1000 ADSL modem
My old Alcatel 1000 ADSL modem
I ordered DSL back in Feb 1999 when I moved into this apartment. This was in the early days of DSL and I ended up with an Alcatel 1000 modem. Pacbell (my LEC at the time) came to install it and put a DSL splitter in my apartment. It's nice because I don't have to use filters on my phone jacks because the splitter takes care of this. This modem still works fine and I was using it up until today. I have never had any issues with it either (locking up, etc.) I decided to retire it and install something a bit more advanced that had a web interface.
