Frost
Leena Thomas’s senior year at boarding school starts with a cruel shock: Frost House, the cozy Victorian dorm where she and her best friends chose to live, has been assigned an unexpected roommate—confrontational, eccentric Celeste Lazar.
What Celeste lacks in social grace, however, her brother, David, a recent transfer student, makes up for in good looks and charm. But while he and Leena hit it off immediately, Leena finds herself struggling to balance her growing attraction with her fear of getting hurt.
As classes get under way, strange happenings begin to bedevil Frost House—frames mys-teriously falling off walls, doors locking by themselves, furniture toppling over. Celeste blames the housemates, convinced they want to scare her into leaving. And while Leena tries to play peacekeeper between her best friends and new roommate, soon the mysterious happenings in the dorm, an intense triangle between Leena, Celeste, and David, and the reawakening of childhood fears all push Leena to take increasingly desperate measures to feel safe. But does the threat lie with her new roommate, within Leena’s own mind . . . or in Frost House itself?
Frost is a stunning and surprising tale of suspense from debut author Marianna Baer.

Bowling Pins and a Bowling Ball -- cupcake style
Bowling Pins and a Bowling Ball -- cupcake style
A friend wanted to make bowling pins and a bowling ball out of cupcakes and needed help because it intimated her. Luckily for her, I had a rare afternoon at home and told her to come over yesterday. I baked the cupcakes the night the night before and she brought the rest of the ingredients when she came over to make these. The construction isn’t very difficult, but you need to make sure there is enough room in the freezer because there are multiple freezing stages. My issue – I didn’t have room and it didn’t help that my roommate made a TJ’s run early that day and stocked up on frozen goods. I ended up digging out my ice chest and filling it with frozen fruits and veggies to clear room for my baking tray. For the bowling ball (the easy part) -A non-dense chocolate cupcake that poofs and domes that's baked in dark colored liner -Chocolate frosting (or whatever you have) -Black decorating sugar or crushed dark colored cookies. -Three standard size chocolate chips Frost the cupcake with your frosting of choice (chocolate works best), press in the black sugar or cookie crumbs, and stick in three chocolate chip, tip side down, for the holes for the fingers The bowling pins (the hard part). -Ten standard size cupcakes, light in color, non-domed, level to the liner after baking in white cupcake lines -Ten mini-cupcakes, non-domed -Ten donut holes -Lots of white colored frosting -Fruit roll-up, red. Removed the liner on the mini-cupcake and glue it on the standard cupcake with frosting. Glue the donut hole on top of the mini-cupcake. Freeze. Frost a crumb coat over everything. Freeze very well. Shape the cupcake/donut hole so that it looks resembles the bowling pin; you’re basically smoothing the frosting out, removing excess frosting and getting rid of various lumps. Warm up about two cups of frosting until can coat the back of spoon and dip the stacked cupcake/donut into the warmed frosting to the liner like you are handing dipping an ice cream cone in chocolate. Freeze. Cut the fruit rollup into small strips and wrap that around the fully frosted bowling pins. Done. The finish product is about four inches tall.

A bit of frost build up...
When I took this picture, we had been getting rain just about every day, and the humidity would be at 100% every night. Apparently, there is sufficient air exchange in my converted chest freezer (which is outside in my brewing area) for a lot of moisture to get inside. Since then I've defrosted it and it has build up again... The past two weeks have been relatively moisture free, so maybe one more defrost will do until next summer...
