Lanchester LD10 engine
Lanchester's immediate post war foray back into civilian car manufacture with a five year run from 1946 to 1951. The car was ready for the 1940 model year but events intervened. Fluid flywheel pre-selector transmission as before but now with independent coil front suspension. Not the quickest with a 1287cc 4 cylinder 40 horsepower engine but when in the Barker bodied aluminium metalwork can possibly nudge 70 mph and certainly a cut above the mainstream Rareish with 3050 made ( and fewer than 600 0f these were with Barker aluminium bodies) and really nice ones go for about ?4000 if recent auction prices are any guide . There is a smart one on fleabay today waiting for a first bid at ?2500. Lanchester had been subsumed into the Daimlers BSA group since the thirties but the firms founder Frederick Lanchester (1868 -1946) together with his two brothers was one of those extraordinary engineers at the forefront of motor car development. Credited with the development of Britain's first petrol driven four wheeler in 1895 Autocar once claimed that of the 36 defining features of a motor car the Lanchester brothers had been responsible for 18 of them listing amongst others, disc brakes, fuel injection, turbocharging,epicyclic gearing, harmonic balancers, torsional vibration dampers, hollow con rods, piston rings, detachable wire wheels, stamped steel pistons and so on. Locks Flywheel in place when removing harmonic balancer on 6.6l duramax engines with Allison automatic transmissions. Saves time by locking the flywheel at the transmission instead of having to remove the starter for water pump replacement. On 2500 and 3500 pickups, remove metal spring-loaded inspection plate on the bottom of the transmission. Tool should slide into opening toward engine with the top of the tool engaging the teeth of the flywheel. On 4500 and 5500 trucks, remove the rubber inspection cap on the bottom of the transmission. Insert the tool at the front of the opening to engage the flywheel and hand tighten bolt to hold tool in place. Use 36mm 12-point socket with 3/4 square drive to remove harmonic balancer bolt and retorque on installation. Package dimension is 4.5 inches width by 5 inches height by 2 inches depth.
