  • In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers.
  • on-line: connected to a computer network or accessible by computer; "an on-line database"
  • on-line(a): being in progress now; "on-line editorial projects"
  • In or into operation or existence
  • on-line: on a regular route of a railroad or bus or airline system; "on-line industries"

Application Layer Proxy to Save Energy in Network Hosts: Design and Evaluation of New Methods That Utilize Improved Bloom Filters
Information Technology generates about 2% of the global CO2. Network hosts, most of which are idle most of the time, are maintained fully powered-on at all times only for the purpose of maintaining network presence. This book develops general requirements for proxying and is the first exploration of application-level proxying with the intention of saving energy by maintaining network presence. Proxying for TCP connections, SIP, and Gnutella P2P was investigated. Proxying for P2P lead to the exploration of space and time efficient data structures to reduce the computational requirements of keyword search in the proxy. The use of pre-computation and hierarchical structures for reducing the false positive rate of a Bloom filter was explored. Potential energy savings are shown to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars per year assuming a modest adoption rate of the methods investigated in this book. This book is for professionals in Computer Science looking for ways to design and implement ideas to save energy in computer networks.

Proxy falls
Proxy falls
Despite the rain and cold weather in Bend, a friend from work and I decided to visit Proxy falls on Saturday. The trip to the falls involved driving over Santiam pass, the place that statistically receives a record amount of snow in Central Oregon. Surprisingly this time, however, the pass was snow-less, indicating that this winter might be a little shorter than normal. The weather and light were just perfect when we arrived at the falls. The rain had just stopped, and we could see the sun peeking through the clouds. The amount of water in the creek was like I have never seen before. It was difficult to navigate across and around the creek, as the water was fairly deep in some places. The spray from the falls also limited the number of good pictures. I had to clean the filter after each shot, until the cloth got so saturated with moisture that it became useless. This is one of the pictures where the camera and lens were still dry.
