3 Lesser Redpoll's(a kind of Finch), Taken with a Canon 7D + Sigma 120-400mm in low sun in the afternoon. I cheated slightly on the golden glow by deliberately shooting in cloudy white balance as the "sunny" setting completely eradicated the warm/yellowish hues. If you check the unedited picture in my photostream you will see this has been heavily edited in Photoshop Elements 8.0: Shadows and highlights(+1 brighten shadows, +3 darken highlights) to give more detail for levels adjustments later on, adjustment layer -> levels to adjust the shadow point(make shadows darker) and lighten midtones, another adjustment layer -> levels to correct colour cast (red 0.96, green 0.94 blue 1.08), after I was happy with these the image was flattened, enhance -> adjust colour -> colour curves, to darken shadows, brigthen highlights and midtones, and increase midtone contrast. It was then cropped to a 5:4 ratio around the birds aiming to get the left hand birds face on the left third and the lower birds head on the bottom third, the detail around the eyes was enhanced with slight application of the dodge and burn tools (4%opacity and a small brush set to shadows for burn, and highlights for dodge), then I duplicated the layer filter -> other -> High pass ~4.0 pixels, blending mode overlay, 83%, flattened and saved, to resize for Flickr it was resized to 1024x819 pixels, and given another application of the high pass filter at 1.0 pix, blending mode soft light 100%. I still consider this a "quick edit"....

Here is Jupiter in Color. Seeing was not as good as a few days ago and transparency was low. The sky was hazy with thin clouds and quite brightly lit by urban lights. After rechecking the ephemeris, I see that there should have been a visible transit of Ganymede during this imaging session. Frankly, I did not see it then and can't really see it in this image either. Details: This was taken with the usual TEC 140 at 4x (3920mm fl @ f/28) DBK 31AF03 color firewire WebCam and a IDAS LPS P2 filter Gain 940 Exposure 1/8 second Stacked 500 of 500 images in Registax Notes: The combination of this filter and the RGB camera gave very natural color. The histograms were well balanced with maxima at very nearly the same values. No adjustments to the color balance were made to this image. I noticed a lot of atmospheric dispersion and I split the RGB layers and realigned them in ImagesPlus. After realignment I did some wavelet sharpening in RegiStax and RL deconvolution in ImagesPlus. Final processing was the application of a 3-layer high pass filter in PhotoShop. The image is a little noisy and acceptable for my first attempt at imaging Jupiter in color.
