Well, after 55,000 miles, the factory installed Michelin tires on my wife's Beetle were spent. Besides the tread being worn-out, there were also spots on the front tires that appeared to be evidence of the inner plies separating from each other. To say it was less than pleasurable to drive would be a bit of an understatement. I ordered a set of Dunlop Direzza DZ101 tires (in the 205/55R16 size that the Beetle specifies) from The Tire Rack. Since I didn't really have time to take the car to have the tires mounted and balanced, my dad.....recently retired.....offered to help us out by removing the wheels from the car and taking them to the tire store since he had to go there for other reasons. Unbeknownst to me, our car came equipped with the optional locking lug bolts. This would have only been a minor inconvenience were it not for the fact that, on one of the wheels, the dealership inadvertently installed a different locking lug bolt than our tool would remove. My father has been employed as an automotive mechanic ever since I was born (albeit, with no experience in VWs...old OR new) and has a fully stocked and outfitted garage at his house. Even so, it took him the better part of an entire day to figure out a way to remove the stubborn locking lug bolt without destroying the wheel and/or other things in the process. He even went to the tire store and borrowed the tool that they use to remove locking lugs when the keys have been lost, but even that was unsuccessful. He finally found a cheap sacrifice-able socket that he could hammer onto the offending lug bolt. After he hammered in onto the lug bolt, he then stuck the MIG welder into the center of the socket and welded the socket to the lug bolt. Once it cooled, he was able to use the biggest impact wrench that he had to finally get the bolt out. Needless to say, we no longer have locking lug bolts; he went to the local parts store and purchased 4 normal lug bolts to replace the locking units. (To add to the frustration of the whole locking lug bolt situation, my wife hit a deer with his car that she was driving while he worked on ours......as seen elsewhere in my photostream) Anyway.........The tires are FINALLY on the car and it has been transformed. It now rides smoothly, and drives MUCH better....without any bumping or bouncing that I'd come to expect with the old Michelins. I paid $77 per tire and about $50 shipping (no sales tax since I live out-of-state)....plus we got a $50 mail-in rebate. I don't expect the treadlife to be outstanding, but that is a trade-off that I'm comfortable with.
