A Message from the Games Directors

On behalf of the entire Special Olympics Northern California Staff and Games Management Team, we welcome you to the 2017 Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games!

We are excited to host you once again at the University of California, Davis, for the 9th year in a row!

The Games Management Team has been very busy preparing for your arrival to ensure that your experience is a memorable and enjoyable one.

The Info Guide is for everyone in attendance at Summer Games and offers important information about all of the activities surrounding the Games. It is meant as a supplement to the information shared at the HOD, coach and volunteer meetings.

Please use the navigation bars at the top of the page to find all of the information you need.

We look forward to providing, hearing about and sharing some great experiences and moments this weekend.

Athletes, we wish you the best of luck in your events that you have trained so hard in all season long.  We hope you also have a chance to enjoy the Olympic Villages, the free Healthy Athletes screenings, and the Dance, Movie and other fun activities.  Enjoy all of it and do your best as you are Brave in the Attempt!

Coaches, thank you for all of your hard work throughout the year and for making Special Olympics such a great experience for the athletes and their families.  Your contributions to the program help to prepare the athletes not only for this event, but for life.

Families and supporters, thank you for allowing the athletes the opportunity to train and compete and for being there for them this weekend and throughout the year.

In the Spirit of Special Olympics,

A Message from CEO David Solo

Dear Athletes, Families, Supporters and Fans,

NBA legend Michael Jordan once said:

“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out a way to climb it, go through it or work around it.”

Special Olympics athletes face obstacles every day. Yet they have shown time and time again that with perseverance, dedication and the right attitude, that anything is possible. The athletes of Special Olympics Northern California (SONC) are inspirations to us all and it is my honor to be a part of this organization.

Welcome to the 2017 SONC Summer Games!

SONC provides the opportunity for thousands of children and adults with intellectual disabilities to break barriers and have the chance to improve their lives and connect with others through sports. As someone who has been involved in athletics – on and off the field – for all of my life, I share a belief in the power of sports and the life lessons that can be taught. Teamwork, accountability, sportsmanship and respect are just a few of the qualities that can translate into everyday life. Sports also has a unique way of bringing us together, regardless of disability, to create a more unified community.

The mission of SONC and our year-round sports programs, along with schools and health initiatives, would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, donors and volunteers. Your impact allows us to host more than 230 competitions a year and build a more inclusive society by encouraging Unified Sports and awareness in schools. We also believe in the success of athletes both on and off the court and are taking great strides to improve their overall well-being through the Healthy Athletes program.

We all have our own set of obstacles. Yet it is rare to leave a Special Olympics event without a smile, a hug and sharing in laughter or emotion. We could use more of that in our world today. I am often approached by athlete families or friends thanking me for touching their lives – but I know that they have impacted me just as much in return. I know that many coaches, volunteers and sponsors feel the same way.

Our Games Management Team has been diligently working for months on the planning and logistics of the Summer Games so that our athletes receive nothing but a first rate competition experience. We look forward to cheering on the athletes in track and field, swimming, bocce and tennis and sharing in the joy of sports with them.

In my two years since joining Special Olympics, I have had the opportunity to meet many of our athletes, families, coaches, volunteers and partners who are essential to the success of SONC. I look forward to meeting many more of you at Summer Games. Together we can create a more inclusive community through the power of sports.

Best of luck to all of our athletes at Summer Games!
