How is this year different?
This year's Tech Café is unique and is a departure from our traditional one-night technology exhibit. We understand that most of us know about the cool devices that are available to you and your students and the impact they can have on learning (thanks, in part, to previous Tech Cafe events). We still want you to learn about available instructional technologies, but this year we would like to showcase how 21st Century Skills and technology enhance the teaching and learning process.

This year it is our goal to provide you an opportunity to see (and participate in) enhanced 21st Century learning and technology-integrated student projects that extend content introduced in The Discovery's exhibits.  Instead of just a one-night event, you will have the opportunity to plan a return visit to The Discovery with your class, participate in a project and showcase the results.

What can I expect at the event?
This event is an educator open house at the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum (The Discovery). Come and experience all that the The Discovery has to offer and sign-up for a return field trip with your class. Attendees will be some of the first educators to be able to sign up for field trips this year.

At the open house, you will have an opportunity to explore and sign-up your class for one (or more) of the technology-enhanced projects that build upon targeted activities in The Discovery. Before, during and after your return visit to the museum, you can keep the learning experience going with one (or more) of the technology-enhanced activities that  feature a range of additional resources and culminate in a summative, hands-on student project. These projects integrate available technology, Common Core State Standards and 21st Century Skills.

Tech Cafe Content Projects include -
  • Cloud Climber/Truckee Connects: Learn about rivers and their uses using the Truckee River Basin as a model.
  • The Da Vinci Gallery:  Magnets, wind, light and machines! Prepare to be inspired by the master himself.
  • The Nevada Stories:  Come experience the digitally enhanced Nevada Stories gallary through the eyes of a Native American, Pioneer, Cowboy, Basque Sheepherder, Miner and a Railroader.
  • Under the Stars: Earthquakes, eruptions and pyroclastic flows. Explore the dynamic shifts of the Earth's plates and geology.
