EVENT DETAILS:

Nearly 500 leaders from business, government, education and non-profits gathered in Raleigh this week to share ideas around the Governor’s “Career & College: Ready, Set, Go!” initiative. Many Voices, One Goal was a collaborative project among a multitude of organizations including NCAE, NCASA, NC News Schools Project, NC STEM Community Collaborative, The Public School Forum of NC and many others.

Participants heard from decision makers, practitioners and innovators working within the public and private sectors about ways to further leverage resources to cultivate innovative public schools in local communities. Concurrent sessions showcased practical examples that participants can implement in their local communities.

Linda Rosen, CEO for Change the Equation, the nation’s leading initiative to advance STEM education, served as keynote speaker. Change the Equation is advancing the role of business and industry with education and government in STEM. Specifically, Rosen advocates for the development of shared strategies across the public and private sectors to accelerate student performance in STEM fields linked to the emerging economy.

Governor Perdue addressed conference attendees highlighting the four big goals for the North Carolina education agenda: (1) demand for great teachers and principals, (2) revamping standards and assessments, (3) quality data systems to track student performance, and (4) turning around low performing schools across the state. In addition, Governor Perdue shared the message of the conference, “the history of North Carolina is still being written. This chapter belongs to us.”
