The 2011 African Art Award in aid of The African Arts Trust
Welcome to the inaugural 2011 African Art Award – the first of what will become Africa's most important annual art award. The Sovereign Art Foundation has run annual art awards in Asia since 2003 and in Europe since 2006. The awards find and recognize the most important mid-career artists in their respective regions. Entry is by nomination by one of our board of experts and then our world renowned judges select the best 30 entries (20 entries for our first year in Africa). The finalists are displayed in a public exhibition giving the artists an international platform and publicity and thereby an important career boost. The works are then sold with 50% going to the artist and the other 50% being used to fund projects which help and support disadvantaged children in the region. This fulfills the charitable remit of the Foundation. Over the years the Foundation has helped improve the lives of many thousands of children using the arts as therapy and rehabilitation. Our supporters get the opportunity to purchase work by the next generation of art superstars so not only do they get a potentially great investment opportunity but assist the charitable work of a Foundation. During the exhibition the judges will select the winning entry. That artist will receive a cash prize of US$25,000 and the opportunity of a 3 month residency at the Nirox Foundation. We also award US$1,000 to another artist chosen solely by public votes cast at the exhibition or on-line. In the coming years the exhibition will expand to 30 works and we hope it will tour to other African countries. Do please take time to view the art works, purchase your favourite pieces and vote.
Wellcome trust may withdraw Olympic Park fund
The Wellcome Trust has threatened to pull its Olympic Park investment if the athletes’ village is excluded from its proposed assets takeover, Estates Gazette reported. The charitable trust’s proposal tabled last week includes converting the Olympic media centre into a life sciences hub that would be home to two universities. Wellcome envisages taking over the freehold of all the park’s assets. But this presents a conundrum for the government which is separately holding an auction for the village. The Olympic Delivery Authority is scheduled to meet this week to decide on preferred bidder, of which Wellcome is one of three on the short list along with a consortium comprising Delancey and Qatari Diar, and Hutchison Whampoa.
