Heading into the Sunrise
Heading into the Sunrise
A beautiful west Texas sunrise on a sunny Sunday morning just out of Ft Stockton heading east on Interstate 10 headed towards Houston. I was riding on my brand new CV joints and drive axle. All was fine in that camp. However, when I did that repair It was noticed by Robert Blue that my tire was extremely bald. It was at that time that I realized that I didn't have a spare tire. I had taken it out to accommodate some riders and forgot to put it back in. so I was 600 miles from home with one bald time and no spare. Tense times. I went to the one tire store in town and they didn't have anything that would fit my car and couldn't get anything for a week. I was going t have to make the journey home with what I had. Not wanting to be stranded out on Interstate 10 by myself I hooked up with Jim Hatchett who was driving the Artcar Museum's Cig's Kill who had been having trouble with his car. The lights were cutting in and out. So he decided to leave at 5 am in order to make sure he got back to Houston before it got dark. Good idea, I'm going to caravan with you. If my tire goes down I'll at least have a ride to the next town. So here we are headed off toward Houston. As it turns out my tire makes the entire trip, but Cigs Kill has lots of troubles. We rode the first 100 miles in the dark with me providing the headlights for both of us. We made it to Ozona where we stopped for fuel. That's where we ran into real problems. Cigs Kill won't start. My little car doesn't have enough juice to jump it and we don't have heavy enough cables to get a jump off of a hummer even. Finally Jim got a new battery at the truck repair shop and we were back on the road. It cost us an hour and a half though that little pit stop. So it was dark before we got back to Houston. It's one thing to drive in the dark on a lonely road out in west Texas, it's quite another thing in Houston. That last leg of the way was pretty hairy. but we made it and all's well that ends well.
was a gas station
was a gas station
This was a gas station during the fifties and sixties and went out of business around 1970-75. Was first a tire store, then a mechanic shop and now a used-car-rental store. It is located at the corner of Silber Rd. and Westview, in Houston, Texas, about a quarter of a mile from my home.
