  • A tire (in American English) or tyre (in British English) is a ring-shaped covering that fits around a wheel rim to protect it and enable better vehicle performance by providing a flexible cushion that absorbs shock while keeping the wheel in close contact with the ground.

a tough winter
a tough winter
The old town has seen many tough winters and this may be one of the toughest. The old saying is, "it's not the years- it's the mileage." The city is over 300 years old, but the last 40 or so has seen her limp along on bad tires; warn struts and a knock in the engine. What is most striking is the resilience of the people here. Maybe it is that peculiar American thing- that optimism- that seems burned into our DNA. The other day I made my normal rounds- Starbucks in the morning, Tijuana Mexican Kitchen for lunch- and what I noticed were larger crowds at both places. More than that, I felt a buzz, a positive buzz, for the first time in a few years. I am not sure why. Could be things are nearing the bottom, or perhaps, folks have settled into the idea we are stuck here. Can’t sell the house and follow the sun like so many did in previous recessions. So let’s get back to work and make the best of it. I love this old town.

Winter Warrior: Helpful but Tired
Self portrait of Cory "Q" Funk, taken on 12/11/10 during what was (as best described on twitter with the hast tag #snOMG) a "major snow event" in the Twin Cities. In fact, at my place, we received over 17" of snow from this single storm. Second only to The Halloween Blizzard I think. This picture was taken at 11am, while the snow was still in full force. I had cleared our drive way and the drives of two of my neighbors. Glad I did because waiting for the entire amount to have fallen would have meant a Herculean task afterward. This was bad enough. The inside of my goggles fogged over from my exertion (I was using a snow blower at that!). All that water is on the inside of the lens. That is a layer of ice on my wool hat. And yes, that is ice in my eyelashes, mustache, and eye brows. Not snow. Ice. Formed from my sweat and breath. I had been out for almost an hour at this point.
