Acer saccharinum
Silver maple, Acer saccarunum (Sapindaceae) is a large tree of stream banks and alluvial bottoms that is also often planted as a street tree, although it has fallen into disfavor because of it huge size, and tendency to blow down during storms. It bears lateral globe-shaped clusters of small wind-pollinated flowers in late winter-early spring, well before the leaves appear. The flowers are contained within the buds shown in this photo, which is of a winter twig specimen that was collected and then photographed indoors in Franklin County, Ohio, USA on February 11, 2011.
My dad won this in an auction yesterday. We went to pick it up today. Isn't it beautiful? Two sides show cherry blossoms and the other two sides show autumn maple leaves. :D
