The singing dishwasher
The singing dishwasher
Wednesday, 27 April 2011 Every bathtub tells a story. Well, not quite... but at least, this one, here in Osaka, does. When you start running the tap, it tells you with a recorded female voice that it is “filling the bathtub”. Five minutes before the bath water is ready, it alerts you with a beep -- and finally, when the preset temperature is reached, it plays a cheery little tune. The bathtub is not the only singer in this household, and it is good to learn as soon as possible who sings what. The rice cooker, for instance, chimes “Twinkle twinkle little star” when it is set -- and when it has cooked, possibly hours later if a preset time was used, it plays a different song to let everyone know that mealtime has finally arrived. The dishwasher, which starts its work after the evening meal, does not communicate until finished, when it plays a cheerful song. I usually enjoy this before heading off to bed. The fridge beeps when its door is left open too long, and the breadmaker does so when the bread is ready. While working on producing it, the machine manages the most astonishing rumbles and jumps about like a Heath Robinson invention. I could easily visualise it playing a minor role in a Japanese anime film! In the wider world outside, lifts talk, trains play jingles and recorded messages, and it is only now that I realise supermarkets’ songs are not just muzak, but dedicated to the produce they want to sell. The vegetable corner is given a vegetable song, the fish stand a song about fish -- and somewhere between the two, the two songs mingle. As Thursdays are general discount days, a special song throughout the shop makes sure you do not forget to buy a bit more.
