Meat-eating by man flouts both the Designer and the design of his physical body, thereby causing manifold diseases, premature senility and the likelihood of a pain-filled old age and dissolution. Scientific vegetarianism, rightly followed, contributes to a healthy life, a vigorous old age and a pain-free, natural death. Meat-eating also causes man to violate the principle of unity which makes all Creation one living organism and all beings "parts of one stupendous whole." The cruelty inseparable from the meat trade degrades mankind, especially the men employed to inflict it. From farm to killing pen, it causes grievous suffering to millions of food animals month by month and to tens of millions year by year. This is an ever-mounting disgrace to mankind. The deliberate infliction of pain upon animals in order satisfy a vitiated taste and gain temporary financial profit - ultimately the loss in medical services and time far exceeds the immediate monetary gain - is a denial of the very characteristic which justifies the title "man", namely, humaneness. Natural and moral laws have for a long time repeatedly been broken by meat-eating humanity. Since the universe is law-ruled, there can be no immunity to the inevitable reaping in kind from this sowing, no medical or pharmaceutical shelters from the automatic, compensatory reaction. The present condition of man, individual, national and international, can be regarded as a consequence of his long-continued infraction of the law of love, compassion, humaneness. The Vegetarian Movement thus assumes immense significance. Evolutionary progress, physical, psychical, intellectual and spiritual: human relationship of all orders: man's creative genius and use of his powers of thought and feeling: human health, efficiency, prosperity and happiness and the welfare of man's fellow citizens on this planet, the members of the animal kingdom of Nature - all these can be profoundly influenced for the better, enormously benefitted, by the universal adoption of a meat-free dietary. In very truth, therefore, vegetarianism is practical idealism. Incalculable benefit could be bestowed upon humanity if effective means, irresistible means, were devised for bringing these truths home to the mind of modern man. How to promulgate effectively vegetarian ideals and practices: how to promote universal vegetarianism: how to shatter the superstition that meat-eating is essential to health: how to break the economic power of the meat industry, the most brutal and degrading on earth: how to lead mankind to normal kindness to animals and to natural, humane ways of living, eating, preventing and treating disease - these are the problems to be solved by the world's vegetarians and humanitarians. The answer to these questions is known, at least in theory. It is the well-organised, ever-increasing output and dissemination of effective propaganda. By healthy, happy, useful lives, by voice, pen and organising skill, and by a national, and later a World Committee - carefully chosen, authorised to act and financed by voluntary contributions, from the widow's mite to the rich man's endowment of the Cause - by those means vegetarianism can be authoritatively and effectively inculcated. Other meals are $4.50 including rice or noodles I am lucky enough to live near Warilla Grove, a lovely little shopping center that has a range of food shops (Woolworths, Bi-Lo, Mitchells Fruit and Veg, Leonards), several takeaways (Kings Chinese, Kebab, Coffee Shop, Chicken shop) , Butchers (Bushs Meats), Chemist, Clothing and gift stores (Home and House, Homeart, GoLo) which make for an enjoyable shopping experience. Recently I had some friends (Michael and Adrian S. from Keiraville) phone me up and suggest we go for lunch. I had only just eaten lunch (a wonderful scrambled egg and mushroom on toast) and suggested they grab a $4.50 meal from Kings Chinese and bring it here to plate up. An hour later Michael and his son arrived with two dishes (Satay chicken and Curried Chicken) and Michael was very impressed with the value for money. Adrian wasn't hungry at first but after an hour of Super Paper Mario Bros on Wii he had worked up an appetite and once he tasted the satay chicken dish he devoured it in no time. Adrian has Asperger syndrome (high functioning autism) and when we first met him back in 2006 all he wanted to eat was white bread with sweet chilli sauce. Over the years we introduced new foods (bok choy, butter chicken, spaghetti bolognaise laden with hidden minced vegetables) with the motivation of being coached through some particularly tricky computer games on PS2 and Wii. After a while he was soon choosing to eat bok choy and actually liking it, and no longer baulked at trying new foods and really enjoyed eating with us at two Shellharbour restaurants (Tandoori Indian restaurant and Ocean Beach Hotel) last year. It is hard to describe how happy it made me to see Adrian enjoying his meal and to know that through a lot of patience, perseverance and motivation you played a part in his food journey. Sometimes it was as simple as putting different types of new foods on a plate and asking him to taste each one and eat at least one third of what was on the plate. The sooner he did so the sooner he would be back playing games. I guess I have my mother to thank for my own open-mindedness when it comes to food, and many of my efforts mirror hers. Both Adrian and Siobhan are benefiting from the greater range of foods in their diet and I can definitely say that it IS worth persevering with fussy eaters. Just keep encouraging them to try new foods and involve them in cooking and shopping for fresh ingredients. I have seen the pain some children have been in when allowed to eat nothing but cheese sandwiches or bread with sweet chilli sauce. Crippling constipation being but one of the side-effects. Find the foods which they will tolerate, encourage them to find the healthy foods that they do enjoy and lead by example and try foods that you haven't tried and make a game of it. Give them praise when they do taste something, even if they spit it out or make a face. They tried, that's the important thing. If they are hungry they will eventually eat the thing they dislike the least, which may soon become a favourite. They will definitely thank you later. 20090528-150208-1
