Burnt Mountain
From one of our most acclaimed writers comes this dramatic tale of a well-born Southern woman whose life is forever changed by the betrayal of her mother and by the man she loves

Growing up, the only place tomboy Thayer Wentworth felt at home was at her summer camp - Camp Sherwood Forest in the North Carolina Mountains. It was there that she came alive and where she met Nick Abrams, her first love...and first heartbreak.

Years later, Thayer marries Aengus, an Irish professor, and they move into her deceased grandmother's house in Atlanta, only miles from Camp Edgewood on Burnt Mountain where her father died years ago in a car accident. There, Aengus and Thayer lead quiet and happy lives until Aengus is invited up to the camp to tell old Irish tales to the campers. As Aengus spends less time at home and becomes more distant, Thayer must confront dark secrets-about her mother, her first love, and, most devastating of all, her husband.

This week’s assignment was difficult for me because it was outside my comfort zone to work with shutter speed, F stop and lighting! I have much to learn! :) My story is about daily exercise which represents an important interest in my life. My self portrait reflects tennis shoes and weights, which I believe fall into the Rule of Thirds. The shutter was open for 1 second. If it was longer than that, the photo was too light. My backdrop consisted of white sheets to cover the dark couch, dispel any background distractions and also serve as an aid for a light source. The lights were off, and I utilized natural lighting that filtered in through the shades from the 3 windows in the room. My F stop was at 3.5. Any smaller or any larger than that created an image that was too light or too dark. (A lot of photos were taken.) A 10 second self timer was set, but, after a number of photos and experimentation, my husband finally set the timer because my foot was sore (I had surgery on Friday). A flashlight was focused on the shoes to draw attention to my story. My face is a prominent part of the composition of this photo and also falls into the Rule of Thirds. I am smiling (even if it is a tired smile) because I will be able to exercise again as soon as I heal from surgery. I did have to use a flash to eliminate shadows. Any suggestions on how I could have eliminated a flash? Also, I would have liked to have blurred the background a little bit to see what it would have looked like, but I did not know how to do that. Any suggestions on that? In one week, I have already played with more things on my camera than I have in the 5 years we have owned it!!
My first run...
My first run...
More like, "my first walk-jog." ;D 4.69 miles in 66 minutes. :) The iPod records all your exercise data [time, distance, pace, calories burned, music, etc.], and then syncs it back to iTunes and even the Nike+ website which you can use to keep track of you progress. I think it's pretty cool, and I don't even like running. The red dot is when I first used my "power-song" - 2.89 miles into my run at a pace of 12 minutes 51 seconds per mile. At 3.18 miles into my run, I hit my peak pace - 11'33"/mile [not that good, but I was tired after 40 min.]. I guess my power-song worked. My slowest pace was 20'57"/mile.The playlist I was listening to was "NIN-Year Zero 320 kbps." :) Average pace was 16'16" - lots of room to improve.

Burnt Offerings
Step inside a vacation house of horror in this terrifying thriller that "does for summer homes whatJaws did for a dip in the surf" (The New York Times)! Starring Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Burgess Meredith and Bette Davis, this riveting haunted-house chiller delivers "hidden terrors [that] mount creepily as the film builds to a climax of pulverizing fright" (Rex Reed)! Marian (Black) and Ben (Reed) find it hard to believe that for only $900 they've rented a sprawling old country mansion for the entire summer. But as they settle into their isolated estate with their son and Ben's aunt (Davis), they find themselves surrounded by a living presencean evil, hypnotic, occult forcethat feeds on torture, fear and murder.

Based on the Robert Marasco novel of the same name, Dan Curtis's eerie movie puts a spin on celluloid haunted-house sagas. The well-adjusted Rolf family (father Oliver Reed, mother Karen Black, aunt Bette Davis, and young son Lee H. Montgomery) rent a huge old summer house only to find that its spirit is in control of the estate. The requisite sinister proceedings appear--including a possessed pool and the vision of a sinister hearse driver following Reed--that disrupt the family's unity. Black also falls under the spell of an elderly woman whom she is required to take care of, but no one ever sees. While it may not be as overtly shocking as other ghost tales, Burnt Offerings has a creepiness that gets under your skin thanks to good performances and the dreamy, soft-focus photography. --Bryan Reesman
