(Photograph from original Victorian glass slide.) 1894 - As people skated on Duchess Pond, Stapleton, the ice gave way, plunging a young man into the freezing water. James Joseph Verschoyle and his brother Theodore went to his rescue but the ice cracked and James fell into the water, along with another would-be rescuer. Theodore got clear, but the following day the bodies of James Verschoyle (20), William Edward Long (19) and Henry James Pollard (24) were recovered. At an inquest held at the Barton Regis Workhouse by coroner Mr Grace, the jury tried to establish the order of events. It was dark at the time and nobody could be sure whether Long or Pollard was first to get into difficulty, although, after learning that the first man to fall through the ice had dark hair, the jury surmised that it was William Long. They returned a verdict that Long was accidentally drowned and Pollard and Verschoyle perished while trying to save him. There was much dispute about whether or not the privately-owned pond was open to the public for skating since, if this were the case, the jury felt that there should have been warning signs displayed and life saving equipment available. As there was an adjacent public footpath, the coroner took the view that those who ventured onto the ice did so at their own risk, although he agreed that it was unfortunate that there had been no life saving equipment to hand at the time of the tragedy.

Winchester Model 1894
Here is my Winchester Model 1894 30cal W.C.F lever action repeater rifle with the full length 12 round spring magazine under the barrel. This belonged to my Grandfather, who purchased it from a friend in college right after WW2 for $30. It is a lovely piece, and a joy to fire. The distinctive sound of chambering a magazine with that lever action will soon be recorded onto my computer because it is so awesome! I wish I could bring it back to the UK with me, but I suppose the recording of the action will have to suffice...plus, they wouldn't allow it for carry on! Strobist: A single SB800 w/Honl Grid CR and above, aimed down at 1/4 power. A4 paper sheets under the rifle as reflectors to define the bottom edge and light up the 'Winchester' stamp. I used my old Nikon D70 body w/my Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 because I wanted to use the high sync speed of the electronic shutter to kill all ambient. Shot this indoors at about 2pm with full sun through the windows...I really like the D70's electric shutter! Very fun to play with and making day into night is pretty stinking sweet! PP was some selective high pass, dodging, and a bit of sharpening. It looks quite too sharpened on flickr though I think...Honestly, press 'L' to view it larger and less crazy sharpened.
