  • Happy 100 Years to 1st Radlett

As some of you may be aware today(16th May) is the day that 100 years ago the Group was officially registered. We therefore today celebrate all 100 years of Scouting in Radlett. Some of you may have noticed marking this, we have had the Harpenden Building Society window with some historic photos and history marking this occasion.

Next week we are holding a Centenary Celebration Evening on Tuesday 21 May from 6.30-8.30 pm. There will be activities for the Beavers and Cubs lead by the Scouts and refreshments will be available for parents to come and hear what the group has been up to for the last year. We will hope to take a Group Photo marking the 100 Years to mark the occasion, as have done for previous anniversaries.
We have also been successful in being awarded a Hertsmere Community Infrastructure grant to do some work on our now over 50 year old building. We will be having the windows and doors replaced and new fire escape fitted at the rear of the building. This will much improve the headquarters for use over the years to come.
Now while this is all great news we do still have problems on the volunteer front.
We are still looking for more adult volunteers to maintain the Beavers and Cubs. We are very fortunate to have a great team leading the Scouts now, but the Cub pack will loose Sarah G in the autumn when she goes to university, meaning there is a risk this may close if we do not have enough adults to run weekly meetings.
Also the Group Executive committee which looks after the building as well as ensuring the group runs efficiently are looking for more members to start on the next chapter of the Group. Our Chair Sarah E has decided to stand down after 7 years involvement, we thank her for her service to the Group, but will now be looking for a replacement. There will be a short AGM at the Celebration evening if anyone would like further information please let us know.

  • 1st Radlett Scout Troop Reopens

1st Radlett Scouts are pleased to announce the reopening of the Scout Troop, which has been closed since the previous leaders left in July 2018. Our new leaders Alex, James P, Maddie, Gemma, Jasmine and James W have come to lead the troop every Tuesday in term time from 7:45pm in our Scout Headquarters in Scrubbits Park Road. Our greatest thanks go to these new leaders, a number of whom have direct experience of Scouting and also volunteer elsewhere in the District.

This all comes in the year of 1st Radlett Scouts Centenary as the Group was officially registered on 16th May 1919. We have had a Centenary Woggle designed by one of our members and as well as having some joint events with the Radlett Guides, who also celebrate their Centenary, we will be having a Centenary celebration with past members and leaders on Saturday 29 June. We would like to take this opportunity to invite past members and leaders to join us at our celebration and to help spread the word. If anyone also has historic documents or photographs of the Group please do contact us on centenary.1stradlettscouts@gmail.com  1st Radlett Scouts has also obtained a grant to improve the windows, doors and fire escape of our headquarters.

As a result of the short time without the Scout Troop, we currently have spaces for any children 10 ½ - 14 years old. There are also some spaces in our Cub Pack for any children aged 8-10 ½ years old. If you would like to join contact info@1stradlettscouts.org.uk  for details. However, we still need helpers, particularly in the Cub Pack, to provide Scouting for all in Radlett.

  • 1st Radlett Centenary Celebrations
First Radlett Scout Troop was officially formed on 16 May 1919. A group of Scouts had met prior to the 1st World War, but only became official when Jack Nash became the first Scoutmaster on his return from active service and when Scout groups were first registered after the First World War. In the past we have celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Group and clearly we would like to mark the centenary with a range of events. In order to do this we need to create a sub committee who would organise such events, perhaps including a Group Camp. If you are interested in helping out, please let either Peter or Jackie know or come to the proposed opening meeting on Wednesday 24 January 2018 at 7.30pm. in the Conference room at the Scout HQ.

  • Scout Christmas Post Service in Radlett
With the Christmas season already upon us, residents and businesses in Radlett can use an alternative postal service this year as 1st Radlett Scouts launch a Christmas card delivery service for the very first time.

Scout Christmas Post services have been run in many locations up and down the country for a number of years.  The Postal Services Act 2000 confirmed an exemption which meant charitible groups such as the Scouts did not need a licence if they wanted to collect and deliver Christmas post between certain dates over the festive period.

From Saturday 25 November, local residents and businesses can post their Christmas cards along with payment of 30p per card in the Scout post boxes located at Budgens of Radlett, Watling Street and Battlers Green Drive Supermarket, Battlers Green Drive.  The final posting date will be at 6pm on Friday 15 December and the post will be sorted, franked and delivered by the Scouts over the weekend of 16 and 17 December 2017.  The delivery area will cover all streets in Radlett.

All the proceeds will be used to support Scouting, including Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts in Radlett.

Scout leader Paul said “this is a great opportunity for the children to get involved with their local community as well as providing them with a fantastic introduction into the world of business”.

1st Radlett Scouts would like to thank Budgens and Battlers Green Drive Supermarket for offering to site the post boxes and to Aldenham Parish Council who have offered their support and have indicated they intend to use the service.

  • Events update
Thank you everyone who attended the events over the Remembrance weekend.

The Quiz on Friday night was very enjoyable, we managed to raise £320 for the group. We had capacity to have more tables enabling us to make more money, so we are seeking new recruits for our fundraising committee to arrange more events to help support the group.

13 young people (and 4 siblings) along with parents sold poppies in aid of the Royal British Legion, we raised £404.47 which is brilliant. A big thank you to Fiona and Peter who with me did the whole 3 hours.

There was a good turnout on Sunday for the Remembrance day parade with lots of positive comments about seeing the Scouts and the flags to make it a memorable event.

Our next fundraising event will a stall at the Radlett Winter Fair when we plan to run a chocolate tombola, so we would appreciate some donations of chocolate, either small bars or large boxes, whatever you feel you can donate as we obviously need lots of prizes, please can these be delivered to me by Friday 24 November.
